C300: Received files from 2 C300 shooters from one day, both showing up 1080i29

Had a big event yesterday with 9 shooters and after importing the footage I am having a problem with the C300 footage from 2 shooters as I import it either in FCPX or Premiere CC. When imported it is showing up as 1080i 29.97 MPEG2. Both shooters claim they followed instructions to shoot at 60fps. Did they both just screw up and are not owning up to it? I don't want to waste time if it's actually just them and not a known issue.

You do know the C300 can not shoot in 60P in 1080P correct? Sounds like they shot 60i and the editing NLEs are interpreting it as 29.97. The C100 does this as well when over cranking. it shoots 60i...NLE interprets it as 30P. You can still slow it down (40%) and works as slow motion (I believe it interpolates the fields)....just not a very good slow motion. If you breath on it...the image will fall apart. it is smooth though.

The C300 can only shoot 60P in 720p. It only does 60i in 1080P.

Did someone give them instruction to shoot 60P in 1080P?

I had only ever shot 24p on the C300 as a shooter but never edited it. I recommended shooting 60fps as it was action sports and wanted a version of the edit at 60fps. The thing is everything shows as 29.97i so it's not auto interpolated or anything.

As a test...fly it in Premiere...adjust the speed to 40%....make sure the quality setting is on "full" and render it. See if it plays back slow mo or if it stutters. Also....keep an eye out for interlacing. You need to make sure the quality setting is on full though and rendered or it won't work. I think FCPX handles it differently than Premiere (could be wrong).

If it still looks interlaced and it does stutter...then it sounds like they just shot in the wrong frame rate.

Well did that and it looks fine playing back at 24p at 40% speed. So weird. We can't either editing platform read it at the correct settings? Not sure if it's worth converting everything to 60fps.

Sounds like they just hit the typical limitation with the C300 and C100. Its weird, I know. Its the over crank workaround for the 1st gen C series cameras.

Another anomaly to look out for is if they are shooting to an Atomos product and they change frame rates in camera...but not on the Ninja2....it will actually record interlaced...and ruin the footage. This error kinda looks the same...except its non recoverable. You have to make sure you manually change the frame rates on the Atomos along with the camera...and then back. I hit that a few times and needed to use the internal media instead of the external Prores.

Yeah it's weird but just part of the 60i workaround for C100/C300. In FCPX you have to select all the clips in the browser, go into the Inspector and then Info, and then check De-Interlace. Then all the clips will magically show up as 59.97 in the browser.

Edit: Sorry, to avoid confusion, I'm only assuming it's the same on the C300, but I've personally only done the 60i workaround on the C100.

Also, if the clips still have their index file, you can load it up into XF Utility and see exactly what the camera settings were.
