F5: Reams F5??

Hey Dennis.. I'll bet ya $5 bucks (US) Sony doesnt disable it in the next firmware. They dont say it will happen nor do they imply it. Trust me, I assumed they definitely would but Im starting to re-think that. While leaving it may and only "may" effect 55 sales slightly, it will definitely boost 5 sales. And we all know from experience they care very little about pissing off customers who paid full pop for something, but for how many units they sell. Profit.

I'll pm you my PayPal address. Lol..

I already have a good indication that's what sony is expecting haha. I know the sony tech guys pretty well and their priority is definitely not protecting their product lines. That mentality changed hence the great success of the F series cameras. What enabled that success is "the best possible product at the best possible price" They know that and will follow that formula afaik....

Hard to say if they will disable it or not. If they want more $ out of it the right way is to sell a 4K internal upgrade. Especially since its already there.

I don't think a 1/2 working 4K mode on the F5 will affect F55 sales. I also don't think it will boost F5 sales because anyone buying brand new has to decide if they want to void their warrant on a $16k camera. Is that worth it? Why not just buy R5 and be done with it if it's that important.

So as far as Sony being into profit, like any company in business to do so, my prediction of what they will do is decide to release a paid 4K internal update, then after X amount of months lower the price and after another X number of months (likely when they are either really feeling 4K pressures or getting close to end of life) include it free.

That is after all what they did with RGB S-Log.

My last prediction is I will probably own you $5

I also think with the Amira coming out with their FFF4K (fuller-frame-fake-4K) that it could be the pressure needed for Sony to announce a 4K internal upgrade for the F5 very soon.

Again hard to say and lots of speculation.

Myself I'm a little more cooled off about the whole 4K situation. The fact is it's been around 18 months after the initial F's were released so really at this point maybe things need to change due to specific market conditions or other factors.

I was so mad at Sony a couple days ago that I bought a AXS-R5, 2x 512GB cards and USB reader to teach them a lesson!

See, the big guy always wins!

Well yeah.... but that gives you RAW, not just 4k. Fact is that internal 4k via XAVC caters for a different market (where a simpler post route is desired). You may want 4k - but not the workflow that 4K RAW brings.

Sony just issued a statement about enabling 4K on the F5 - basically just saying warranty won't be covered and performance not guaranteed., yadda yadda yadda

It seems this loop hole will become disabled functionality by the next major firmware update.

But if you read that statement carefully it no more implies they will use the next firmware upgrade to block it as to make it official.

I suspect the wording is deliberately ambiguous whilst they work out what the f*** they will do! :)

All they really say is "Sony cannot approve any modifications that are not part of an official firmware release" which is kind of stating the obvious. No more or less than anyone should expect.

The rest of the statement doesn't really give any steer as to whether the next "official firmware release" will indeed block this - or make it official. Or, for that matter, just leave the situation as is - do it if you wish, but be aware you may void your warranty, and it's nothing to do with us if things go wrong. On balance, I'd put my money on exactly that, if only because it more or less echoes what happens with the use of SDHC cards in XDCAM cameras via an adaptor. They didn't block that - but gave it an "at your own risk be it" warning.

You may want 4k - but not the workflow that 4K RAW brings.

4K RAW worklow isn't as hectic as its made out to be.

After a days shoot,
copy the cards and have dinner/cup of tea/coffee
slap footage into Sony Raw viewer
select all, set convert to 1080P proxies
go to sleep
wake up
and its as if you shot edit friendly dailies
edit the proxies
lock down edit
export xml
load Resolve
Bring in the RAW files and audio
import XML
DONT connect to proxies, rather leave unticked, resolve will connect to the relevant clips, but now being the raw ones
Grade RAW in bliss
Deliver/export with xml back to NLE in codec of choice
Load into NLE and finish.

Besides the "convert to 1080P proxies" step, All of this was my normal workflow. The extra step is negligible. Yes RAW is a massive drive space hog, but you don't have to keep the RAW footage forever.

^ Justin, great steps and overview.

Also don't forget that the F5/F55 can record simultaneous proxy files while recording RAW to the R5 so if you're in a time crunch and don't want to spend the time transcoding then you've already got HD proxy files available as an option.

My only other comment in the above workflow is that the edit doesn't actually have to necessarily be 100% locked.

With the workflow I commonly use in Resolve you can set up your project so you can render out the entire length of the original clips if you want which allows for "some" flexibility once the files are relinked back in your NLE. This is handy for small clip trimming tweaks but will not necessarily allow the complete edit to change - I say "some" flexibility because obviously if you graded to the edit and for example used any advanced features like motion tracking masks and keyframed wheel values then you would have had to work on the entire clip not only the clip portion from the original edit provided.

So the cat is out of the bag...
check over at sonyalpharumors and say hello to the fs700II

now i'm pretty sure the V5 software update will bring 4k to the F5...

interesting to see a new lens too. and all the AF, Iris WB Buttons on this new cam...

i just hope they have a decent plan for us F55ers...
otherwise my future purchase decisions will stop at 15000 dollars.

well well....

I like a users post from SonyAlphaRumours;

This is going to sound weird, but isn't it convenient that internal 4K was found on the F5/F55 a week ago? A few weeks before this $10,000 (guess) camera (possibly) undercuts them both? So what do we give the grumbling F5/F55 buyers? Internal 4K. Just a thought, and Sony just got a bunch of publicity/articles written about it? Just a thought.

That's a little to far because it was hidden in the firmware all the time. Check firmware 4.11 and one before and you will now if it was added at that point. I do not think they've contacted Paul or something like that, maybe they've left this workaround and just expected that it'll happen at some point.

I think it just means exactly as Stefan has said, the F5 is probably going to get 4K more 'officially' and the meaning of my quote was more the irony of it all.

I can confirm Sony have never contacted me... I wish they would !!!
I've got a whole bunch of questions.

on a more serious note:
i hope they will produce this lens pictured in the sonyalpharumors pic
also for FZ mount....
probably the rumored powererd 35-108 or something alike...
would be nice to have for lots of run'n'gun work

Looks lke the 18-200 power zoom to me.

Hello all. I just made the jump and 'switched' on the 4k option on my F5. I am now getting a 'Fan Stopped' warning message which keeps popping up - and I can't seem to switch it on via the menu. Do you think the two things are connected? Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on getting the fan going again? Thanks in advance, Sparky
