FS7: Really Interesting FS7 thread...

The 875 also deals well with handling & wind noise - probably because it was originally designed as a camera mic .

The 875 is a great design for scratch audio but not even close to the NTG-3 if you want to use the sound of doing doc work etc. I have both, my 875 doesn't get used.

What do you mean by "sound of sound doc work", Dean?

On camera actuality? I don't doubt the NTG3 has a bit more reach etc, but it's quite a trade-off in size.

If you can cope with the bulk, cool - but finding a way to mount it, with low handling noise and without it flopping around and getting in shot, can be a challenge. I found it easier on a C100 before, as it sat higher. You've got some good suggestions for padding it out, though.

It's more directive, the sound is richer and there's less noise. I'm no sound techie, though I work with one at times and to us both there is a lot more precision in terms of what it picks up. Wouldn't go back to the 875, it's still great, but the quality of the NTG-3 far outweighs the fact it's slightly harder to mount, for me anyway, as I don't always have my subject mic'd up doing what I do. Yeah the ideas have been great, just going through them now, haven't had chance as on a big project working looooong hours at the minute.

Well, I found it interesting...

Me too! I have a NTG-3 but I don't fancy placing that on camera so I like the other suggestions mentioned here. The mic I have placed in the holder is some old crappy eng mic that's about a 100 years old.

Hey Dean, you could always sell your 875? ;-)
