REAL cinema anamorphics on the 5d mark 2!

Hey Hunter,

A couple of questions... Does the adapter just snap into the eos mount? Or do you have to modify it somehow?

And how much does the adapter cost to purchase?

cool footage, I love the look of these anamorphic adapters, but the distortion is really distracting. An excess of warping as thigns pass from the center towards the edges of the frame.

Just clicks in- I think it was about $300- talk to steve over at cinemods.com for a better idea on the different prices.

Yep- seems like the majority of anamorphic lenses have barrel distorsion, are you a fan of Wes Anderson's films? ; )

Thanks to my friend Steve Morton, I now have an adapter that can accept my lomo roundfront anamorphics on EOS cameras. I just got it in today so no footage yet but I will try to get some in soon.

The adapter goes from oct-19 to EOS, so I can use all of my roundfront anamorphics that have not yet been converted to PL mount (I guess you could also use regular oct-19 primes and zooms too). SO excited about this as you can get the full anamorphic gate size on the 5d mark 2 sensor. (pardon the iphone pictures...)

UPDATE
FOOTAGE (pardon the sloppiness, no cc, just de-squeezed in shake);

Hunter, can you give me a rough idea of when you are out of your house ?

Hi Hunter
As you mention to be a friend, I tried to send a mail to Steve Morton, as he is the one who makes the mount, regarding the possibility of mounting Oct-19 Lomo Prime (non anamorphic) on a a 7D
If there were any issue with the mirror blocking the lens, do you know anything about this ?
I have a set on order, just waiting for his answer prior buying one of his mount
Regards from Saigon

i did not crop this from the 5d

These anamorphic lenses seem really cool. I'm wondering, what is the real benefits of using anamorphic lenses on video versus just cropping the frame? It would be great to see a test of the 5d footage with the frame cropped to 2.35, and then the same shots with the anamorphic lens to really gauge the difference in picture. Is it going to be at all different?

Here's my train of thought here:

To get the scope ratio in 1080 HD the dimensions would be 1920x817 if you're shooting for 2.35:1. Shooting in 1920x1080 and then cropping the horizontal lines out to 817. With the anamorphic lens, you're essentially shooting 1920x1080 and stretching to 2538x1080. Now, you have to export the footage after editing, so you go back to 1920x817....hence negating the purpose of the anamorphic lens. I'm thinking that you could export as 2k uprezzing the footage to 4096x1742? Then again, downrezzing from 2538x1080 to 1920x817 MIGHT make the footage look sharper...but again I would like to see a side by side test of this. (I know that with my HVX...if I shoot HD and downrez to 480, the footage looks better than if I shot in 480....so maybe this ideology applies?)

I'm not contesting the lens by no means...I'm just trying to justify it in my head, because my head is telling me it's no different than simply cropping.

then look harder... especially at the way light interacts with objects and the bent glass in bokeh, oblong out of focus highlights, glare & flare + the famous streaks...
there is no comparison really. the recorded image is optically different before hitting the sensor.
cropping is less pixels from a regular image. anamorphics add a touch of elusive magic while shooting that can't exactlly be replicated in post without looking a bit cheesy.

Thanks rhervag. Like I said, I would LOVE to see a comparison of anamorphic vs cropping, to see the 'elusive magic' you are referring to. If anyone knows of some footage, I would love to see it. If the 'magic' appears...I think I'll be in the market for one these lenses! ;)

I always wondered, why does canon put those 2 grey bars over the video image and crop it off to 16:1. Is it possible to recover that part of the video? If so then using this lens will give a less wide ratio. I just emailed to magic lantern with this question and await their reply.

Because they want to follow the standard 16:9 which is aspect ratio of most new TV's and HD aspect ratio.
Many camcorders are switching to 16:9.Option to record full sensor on canon DSLR's would be great for anamorphic.SD resolution is more like a square but even then IMO they should record whole sensor in its 3:2 ratio instead of cropping sides to get 4:3.
Only pentax K7 have video recording of whole sensor in 3:2 mode ,its in weird res but hey,it doesnt really matter because you can always crop it yourself.
