In ten years time it's unlikely that they will be watching their wedding video at all (very few do after the first year, assuming they are still together) and plasma TV's will likely have been replaced with something better.
Hahahaha... now there is a new argument I haven't heard... implying... who cares, in 20 years the'll be divorced... ::) ... sad and funny at the same time. :)

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

The XL2 is a great camera, but 4-5 years down the line it's going to look awfully dated. Fine for now, but when you are trying to pick up work against other videographers that can offer HD, you are going to be overlooked.

If that becomes the case, and I seriously doubt it, whats to stop him from buying the latest HD offering? Again, there is no rush. You can have a camera delivered overnight if the situation is really that desperate. There's absolutely no danger of being left behind, only a danger of jumping into the wrong technology.

That wasn't really what I meant to convey, only that no one knows what people will want or be watching in the future.

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

I guarentee them HD when it is available. In the contract I stipulate that as soon as the technology is here I give them a HD DVD of their big day.

So, in essence, You are commiting your future time to deliver a product. Seems risky to me.

HD or SD... Either way their is no iminent "Danger"... no code red really either way... pro and cons to both?... absolutely. Risky? What isn't risky in this buiz... At this price point? Danger?!.... I think is a bit extreme. Let's go with potential profit loss (can go either way)... that's really about it.

That is what he said John.  How does your reply help this arguement... again I'm just wondering... :)
I didn't realize we were arguing; Booya! ;) ;D :D

Seriously, I was laughing at the premise of it all. Not a stab at anyone (much less Steve) considering or doing this now. It was one of those "Wow. Really? No ****? " :o type of responses.

Props to them. The best take however is JEFFS; those couples won't even be toegther in 10 years! At least 50% anyway :-/

VideoGuy; you'll find the happy face is my FAVORITE emoticon; sans the missing SARCASM EMOTICON that still eludes us. :D

gotcha... word... ;D
True!... I've been looking for that one also. ... In the words of the simpsons comic book guy "There is no emoticon to express what I'm feeling!!" ;D

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

10 years? It'll be a blessing if they can even last 2... :) Of which, Steve, you'll make a killing... with the gurantee cause there'll be a whole big bunch of people who wouldn't need the HD version of their big day anymore :)

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

"Clients will be watching their weddings in 20 years time. I give them the opportunity to own it in high def. "

I just looked at the 8mm movie from my friends wedding, it is nice to see it was years ago. Clothes, hair, cars, music, it all changed enourmes in 20 years. 20 years from now the HDV 1080i look is outdated as the SD signal now. Cd,DVD, Hdvd, Blue Ray, Blue Ray 8... Progessive screens...

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

Jnolla, I won't need tons of hard drive space at all. All I will need is a DV tape to store it on!

David Jimersen,
I work in FCP. With the recent release of iMovie 5 HD, you can now capture with it, work in FCP, and send it back to iMovie for out to tape. It won't be long before FCP will be out and I will be able to do away with iMovie, but at £49 it's an absolute bargain!

The guys at Lumierehd.com have taken so long with their capture software no one is now going to buy it! ::)

What I'm saying, Steve, is that if you keep the project file -- whatever FCP's extension might be (“Johnson Wedding.xxx” – where .xxx would be the extension, like .doc or .veg), it takes up little space, has all of your project info, and will store the timecode data for each tape and will be able to recapture every clip exactly the same as you did the first time.

Sure, you can archive the finished product out to tape, but if you keep the project file and the original tapes, you can re-edit something later. Change the font in the titles, for example – which would a lot harder to do with just a master of the finished program.

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

Having listened to all sides of this argument I must side with Steve.  Here is my reason:  Every time a new technology comes along there will always be foolish as well as educated decisions made on the commitment to the novelty.  I strongly agree with Steve in the reality that HD is our future, how can anyone be so shortsighted?.  I love my DVX100 just like I still love my two VX1000s but I cannot close my mind to the certitude that in five year's time SD will most likely be going the way of the eight track.  I myself am looking at the Sony HDV cams but since I am in no instant need for buying one I will wait on the sidelines and see the reaction of Panasonic and JVC and in the far future Canon regarding this format which IS here and will remain here for quite a while.  Steve is on the right track, I have HD at home and love it.  Whenever I switch to an SD signal I want to change the chanel right away I feel like I am watching low res Avid. I work for one of the major players in American network and cable TV and here we all aknowledge the fact  that all the new equipment we buy has to be HD upgradable in the future. The writing is on the wall, it reads HD.

I haven't noticed where anyone here has argued that some form of HD is not in the future. The only arguments are, is it going to be HDV, and how far into the future before it is the dominant format? Lacking a definitive answer to those questions makes it easy to wait.

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

At Sony's spec of 25 mgs per second, HDV uses the same amount of storage as DV.

HDV will never be the dominant format, but it may be very effective at intercutting with 720P HD. Also I believe much of this discussion was about developing a competitive advantage to add more value so you can charge more for services. The XL2 is a "nice" camera but I don't think there's enough differention from any other DV camera.

Check this out: http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...odel=AJ-HDX400&surfCategory=DVCPRO Camcorders
It is basically the Varicam withoug 24P and is about $25K less. That is a significant price reduction since last NAB. I know it doesn'y have 24P but it does have Panasonic's exclusive CineGamma Software that lets you closely replicate the look and feel of film. Now if they can shave off another $10K and add P2 I'd ourchase one of these immediately... ::)

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

At the end we decided to hold on. We are going to give to take 3 weeks to listen to feedback from current users.

I was talking it over with Chris at ZGC, who by the way has the best customer service ever!, that coming from a former Sales Manager at CompUSA, and decided to hold on, and we both agreed that it was an extremly hard decision.

The jury is out for deliveration, and we have three weeks...

Thanks for all the feedback, we really take into account all of the postings!

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

HDV will never be the dominant format

Are you speaking about "consumer/prosumer" level of HD, or HD in general. Because, at the lower level, the jury is still out as to whether it will be dominant, partly dependant upon overall acceptance, and Panasonics response. If your're talking HD in general, you're right.

The XL2 is a "nice" camera but I don't think there's enough differention from any other DV camera.

I can't agree with this at all. It is one of only two prosumer cams that has 24p and 16:9. I would say that's a major difference.

I could say the new Sony's are the only cams to offer HD which is a "major" difference also, but I won't out of fear.... ;D

Again, it's all relative.

I think the real questions jnolla you need to address is what is your time frame. You will get a lot of different opinions here which I'm sure has been communicated to you like an anvil on the head... in 3 weeks, technology wise, nothing much is likely to change so if it's still a toss up I would suggest renting/borrowing each to conduct your OWN opinion based on your OWN needs. Make sure (if you have the opportunity) you try to test each in the most common settings/environments that most of your events take place in.

Opinions are like... well ... you know the rest. :)

Its not a Varicam without a 24p only. the HDX400 has no variable frame rates at all. Recording at 1080i... its a HDTV ENG camera. :)

Re: Ready to purchase 2 Z1's

VIDEOGUY

It is indeed relative isn't it? I'm with JEFF on this one. If I was in the market I'd be hard-pressed over the XL2 -vs- DVX-A

Okay, actually, I'd get the DVX-A but you know what I mean. :D

Give me 24p or give me......!
