GH4 Re: Remote Control Unit?

Re: Remote Control Unit?

This question actually pertains to the GH2, GH3 and GH4....

Do these cameras have a way of controlling the settings such as iso, shutter, f-stop, rec/start/stop...etc remotely?

I'm thinking of using one of these on a MoVi as a one-man band and would need to control the camera without having to touch the camera body itself.

REGARDING THE LENS FOR REMOTE CONTROL USE:
I also realize that controlling f-stop in this way requires an electronic lens.
I would need a roughly a 14mm APS-C equivalent field of view lens any suggestions?

The wifi on the GH4 is probably your best bet. For a 14mm-on-APS-C FOV-equivalent you will want around a 10-11mm lens. If you have to have an electronic lens, check out the Panasonic 7-14mm f4, or the Olympus 12mm f2 might work for you but is a smidge narrower. And at that point, if you decide 12mm is wide enough, you could also look at the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 or Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 zooms.

The GH2 and GH3 do not do this, however the G6, GX7 and I beleive GH4 do via wireless app to a smart device. Perk: device also acts as a remote monitor during live recording- super cool.

The GH3 does, but it shuts of while recording, but you can set shutter, iso an so on via an ipad or phone.

Also, for the GH3 you have to pre-set clip recording time, and cannot stop earlier except at the camera. This and the absence of live view on the pad during recording makes it pretty useless for video remote control. We can only hope Panny have addressed this on the GH4!

^ That's why I said the GH3 doesn't do this. Because for all intents and purposes, it doesn't. :/

I'm a huge fan of the manfrotto focus/iris remote for Panasonic camcorders. I even use it on my shoulder rig for fingertip focus by the front grips.

I don't care about wireless-anything, personally - I've seen the lag you get even via USB on DSLRs, and I'm happy with HDMI for monitoring.

Never owned a GH-series, but what are the odds of the GH4 having remote control of focus and start/stop? Those are really needed for cranes & rigs... everything else is gravy.

The GH4 will likely make a GH user out of me regardless, but remote focusing (even if it means skipping my Nikkors) would have me pretty psyched.

As far as I know, there isn't any wired remote option. I know Wifi seems like overkill for what you are describing, but to be honest it is easier for them to do it this way since it only requires software to implement versus a physical hardware controlled port.

Also, for what its worth, I also remember the USB follow focus options for other cameras being laggy. This, I can't explain how they do it, but from what I've seen on the G6 and GX7, seems to have very little lag, if any. It doesn't make any sense to me as I'd expect a wifi connected smartphone remote to be laggy as all heck, but check it out for yourself. You might be surprised, as it appears to work better wireless than other recent wired options!

The Manfrotto 521PFI wired remote controls aperture and focus on most Lumix lenses on the Panasonic AF100, but it plugs into a Lanc-style socket in the camera. I don't think the GH4 has this socket and I don't know of any other MFT camera that uses it.

Next, we need all those remote-app creators to give us a follow-focus style control... virtual scroll-wheel vs. touch to focus (this may exist for all I know, but being able to set focus marks and actually label them and program focus stops on a screen would be great.)
