Re: inconspicuous XLR microphones for boom/on-camera

Re: inconspicuous XLR microphones for boom/on-camera

I'm looking for an XLR microphone that is the MOST inconspicuous for boom and on-camera audio. Assume that the camera and recording device is able to provide phantom power..

Usage would be for live event coverage and interviews.

PS: I saw the Rode NTG-1 and even though it is one of the shorter cardioid mics out there it still feels too long.

It's not the mic that's conspicuous, it's the boom pole, the blimp, the fur...

Sennheiser makes a hyper mic that seems about 2" stubbier than the usual (non-shotgun) suspects (I've only seen photos in music gear catalogs), but it's still a microphone. Maybe you could stick a lav mic on the end of a boom... but booming is a conspicuous activity.

He means that the intrusive part is the umpteen metres of metalwork waving around holding the mic. Cutting down the mic by 6" won't reduce the impact much at all.

I've got some small cardioids that are the same diameter as the XLR plug and about the same length - so quite small, but stick them on a boom and people still see them.

keep in mind that the size of the shotgun mic effects the pickup pattern and the background noise rejection. If you are doing live event stuff you want a narrow pickup pattern thus a longer mic.
