Re: Guerilla 35 - Barry? Noah K?

From the footage I saw, this looks great. But like the Andromeda, the G35 is going through beta testing. That's okay, I don't mind waiting, at least they're looking for kinks rather than releasing it prematurely or in different versions like the P+S Mini35. =P

Barry, I know that Jonathan said that you could get 16.9 by using an Nikon F mount lens. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks

I have no idea what you mean.

Are you saying there's some sort of 1.333:1 anamorphic Nikon lens? I'd be most surprised to hear that. Seriously, I don't know what you mean -- can you reference the original post?

Possibly... but that still wouldn't make much sense. Wouldn't work with a Nikon F-mount, and wouldn't give you 16:9 (it'd give you 2.66:1 instead)...

thiswells and Barry. I asked Jonathan about how could you get 16.9 by using the adapter.

Here's a bit of what he said in his answer.

"You can get Nikon F mount Anamorphics. The adapter will be the same either way."

But he personally didn't like using the anamorphic adapters and would do it in post.

My question was would by using a Nikon F mount Anamorphic lens would it work the same as the Panny Anamorphic adapter?

Oops see that you answered me, Barry, it'd be 2.66:1

I agree that Jonathan/G35 seems to be more interested in quality than in time to market or marketing. I actually met Jonathan today and was able to demo the G35 (prototype build) and I must say I was very satisfied with the image quality, and with Jonathan in general, he's definitely much more interested in optics, image quality, and stability, than in sexy marketing and releasing the product early. The prototype model I saw, which he has a handful for sale, was really solid (could take a hard knock with no adverse effect), which is why I'm growing leary of the moving GG designs, especially given that I have yet to see any image from any of the DIY designs, that is better than what I saw today.

Hey Shawn,

I have seen jon's footage as well, and through the internet it looks good. I'm not sure how you can compare a DIY version with Jon's production prototype. Are you concerned about the DIY aspect or the moving gg aspect? You could look at any mini35 footage for moving gg quality.

I wish we here at micro35 could offer you more sample footage to show you our capabilities. We are knee-deep in finalizing our production runs, and as you've pointed out we are more worried right now about getting the product right: optics, image quality, and overall product quality. Fortunately the sample footage should be addressed shortly as we've been approached by some high profile projects to use our adapter.

Maybe once we are all through our collective growing pain phase, we can do a head-to-head comparison of everything out there. I think it would benefit everyone.

I'd be up for that. Why not just send them to a respected user? Barry Green? That way we can get a totally unbiased opinion.

TO THA BOTH OF YOUZ, I need one for my pilot which begins shooting June 3rd, what's really good??? ;-).

Actually someone just offered me the use of the F900 but when you guys are ready I'm there. Take your time and get it right. Thanx.

I've also asked to test the Micro35, so there would be no bias towards Jonathan's product, and I don't think he was suggesting there would be. And I've used the mini35 as well.

For a test, I'd probably pit both units against the mini35 as well... I think that's what people would want to see: how do these units compare against each other, and how do they compare against the $10,000 mini35...

Please do not be mislead. Barry is not endorsing our product. He thinks there are some pretty big issues with the current version. We took note and are fixing in our final production run. We were just the first to send our product to him. I'm sure James is going to send him a Micro35 as soon as they can. I think a comparison between our lower cost products and the Mini35 would vary interesting.

Barry, I guess we sort of signed you up on your behalf - I hope you don't mind too much :)

I also think a really important comparison Barry can provide (perhaps the most important) is to the mini35. The whole reason micro35 exists is because we want to bring the quality tools of professional cinematographers to digital filmmakers at a price we can afford. We see this not only for 35mm adapters, but other vital cinema accessories as well (see the thread on DIY follow focus).

The odds of going to a film out on film is very high.

But I think that any real test would be to do a film out. See how it holds up as well. With your beta testers footage.

Gary - I think there are a number of "real tests" - the importance of which depends on the audience. Many of the indie filmmakers and students who are interested in the micro35 don't stress the importance of film out. Others see HD as the real test. I guess it depends on what's important to you. micro35 received a generous offer to have some of our (forthcoming) footage transferred to 35mm. I'm not sure how we could make this available to everyone, but perhaps someone could take a look at it in person and give feedback

Brian
