C100: Re: Fraudulent C100 ebay listing: 370899101095

Re: Fraudulent C100 ebay listing: 370899101095

The post appears to have been taken down, but it appears to be a fraudulent C100 posting.

There has been a recent spate of ebay postings targeting film/photo professionals.

The last one was this one targeting Nikon D4 buyers:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?312938-Re-Nikon-D4-an-ebay-listing-legit

These posts follow the same pattern of behavior:
- They list the item at well below market value
- In the item description they say "This is a 'pre-approved' ebay listing. Anyone interested please send me an offer to xxxxx@gmail.com"
- And when you email them to inquire, they will say something like "We are selling this through ebay's xxxxx program." They got smarter and now mention "Ebay Buyer Protection Program" which apparently is included in all of your purchases. So the fact that they make it sound as if they are "USING" this service is false as people do not have the option of using this or not as it is included in all of your ebay purchases.
- Here is the kicker... they want you to wire the money to them! And they will not put a "Make an Offer" button on the ebay posting! Thus voiding the buyer protection program they quoted earlier! However they always frame it as if they are doing this "through" ebay.
- Oh and another kicker: You can email them ANY price, as low as you want to go and they will reply in the following manner "I am agree with your price! The buy it now price/option is available only through eBay Buyer Protection Program. The transaction will be handled through eBay. If you are willing to buy the item please email me with the following: your full name, full address, eBay user name and phone number. So i can contact eBay to start the transaction through their Buyer Protection Program. eBay will send us the invoices with all the instruction how to complete this transaction."
- The images they use to display their product is usually taken from postings from other sellers. In this case they used the same image as this seller: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251329552052?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
- When you click "Ask a Question" the user has set his/her ebay account to reply "We're sorry we couldn't find an answer for you. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of messages this seller receives, they are unable to respond to your specific question right now. We suggest reviewing the item again to see if your answer is in the seller's listing." because they don't want to be contacted through ebay's website but would rather you contact them through their personal email instead.
- Once the user gets enough inquiries via his/her personal email, the listing is promptly taken down.

Too hilarious. The C100 posting was done by an "ebay seller" by the name of surita35. This seller supposedly has over "14000" reviews. However each review averages around $10, and most likely are fake sales generated by the user him/herself to legitimize themselves.

So beware.

Some of these sellers are legit sellers that have had their account info hacked as well. That is the other reason the scam artist wants you to send the email outside of ebay, they cannot change the email address that ebay sends the email to. When you see they have sales in things that are not related to the high ticket item then you know that something isn't right.

I ran into something similar when looking at a Sachtler tripod. I spotted it right away when I got the ebay protection email from outside of ebay. Which never happens if it's a real ebay email.

I am scared to buy anything from ebay. I do buy small items from amazon. Rest all are new from B&H and a few times from other reputed stores.

Yeah, I've seen a few of these recently in the camera department. Saw a few C100s up for WAY less than they should've been. Irritating to have to wade through scammers but thanks for posting.

That's EXACTLY what happened. Within the span of 1 hour at least three ebay accounts were hacked by the SAME hacker. They used these hacked accounts to sell fraudulent items. WOW.

Therefore never give your ebay ID + phone number + address to anyone or it can get hacked.

I just phoned ebay's fraud alert line and the guy on the line had zero clue what was going on. Doesn't give me confidence in shopping on ebay. He said he had to forward the info to someone "higher up".

When you email the seller they send these to you that look officially generated by ebay. Note that I made up the ebay ID kit50123, which does not exist on ebay.

The address I gave to them is also bogus (it's actually the Police department of Libertyville, Illinois, United States. The city of the ebay account surita35 they hacked into). They obviously didn't stop to check what this address actually is, because they just want your money and have no intention of sending you anything legitimate:

Here it goes again. The same fraudster doing it again. Here is another listing that just popped up:
LISTING 1:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Canon-EOS-C1...rofessional_Video_Cameras&hash=item485a07f893

LISTING 2:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Canon-EOS-C1...rofessional_Video_Cameras&hash=item485a07f7b2

This time the fraudster is using a different server to host the product images and the description images:
http://www.morningzuu.com/Photos/69/1.JPG
http://www.morningzuu.com/Photos/TEST.JPG

They used these servers before:
http://dtrajnsa8sa.com/new or http://www.dtrajnsa8sa.com/cardeles

i.e. http://dtrajnsa8sa.com/new/TRST.JPG

Notice how the "seller" wants you to contact them via their gmail account and not through ebay. Also notice how the ebay id behind this "seller" memaw0418-2008 was probably hacked as it has over 1000+ reviews each of which are from sales of small ornaments and necklaces but none are pro camera equipment.

Also, the image above is from an old ebay posting seen here:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251329552052?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

...and is from a legit ebay seller named frontrange2013 who actually sells pro camera equipment (as witnessed in his/her sales history).

I've purchased about 500 items from ebay without loosing money. I follow these rules:

1. Always use paypal to pay.
2. Only trust the communication you do within the ebay message system.
3. Ask questions about the item and if in doubt ask to get newly taken pictures.
4. Look at the other items a user has sold. Does it seem reasonable that they are selling this item also?
5. If something looks to good to be true it probably is.

Great advice. My only fear is that the guy doing this stuff seems pretty comfortable with pro-camera equipment, meaning he might actually be "in the industry". I'd hate to be filming on set with this fraudster. I hope they catch him.

Ebay ID, phone number, and address is enough to get hacked? I never would have thought that.
