General Re: 70D vs NEX5R Autofocus

Re: 70D vs NEX5R Autofocus

Which camera does better in autofocus mode?

I'm looking for an AF that does no hunting and has smooth transitions as the system is pulling focus AND can face track.

I can't comment on the 5N.

DxO did compare the 70D to the Sony A77 with the translucent mirror. For video autofocus, the 70D was at least as good. Better at low light:

I think the A77 is the best Sony for autofocus? So you can find a comparison to the NEX online.

Here is another video with commentary by Petapixel:

Thanks for the awesome links! The A77 seem to hunt more than the 70D.

I've been following the 70D and Canon C100 dual pixel auto focus discussions recently, as we get closer to Photokina and some new announcements.

The 70D and dual pixel auto focus in general look like awesome tools for video. I will probably buy a new body sometime this fall, after we see what is announced.

I am also using a couple of EOS M cameras. That is basically the Canon T4i in a body & lens combination (with the 18-55 mm) that is about 1/3 of the size and weight as the T4i. I am really, realy hoping (and expecting) that the EOS M3 will have DPAF. If it does it should be a great little camera! (Assuming we also get DR and other updates.)

Here are some additional videos showing various aspects of the 70D auto focus compared to the Canon SL1 and the Nikon 7100. Interesting too!

I also assume that we will get the DPAF in the next Rebel - a T6i - and probably the 7DII. Good times for video if so!

Cheers!

Im using the 70D since last September and I m really happy with its AF. If you ll learn how to properly use it, it is an AMAZING tool. If you try to use it where u should not...it will bite you:)
I hope and believe it will be a standard feature for all the next DSLRs and C models!

Are there any videos or tutorials on how to properly use the autofocus on the 70D?

This is a video of Philip Bloom talking about Dual Pixel AF on the Canon C100. Its a really interesting video, not only because it is demonstrating the AF and giving a few good tips, but because he shows he is open minded enough to say that a tool like that can be useful even in serious filmaking. I can hear some of you saying:..."come on that video is sponsored by Canon...of course he d say that"... well I dont believe he would do that video if he wasnt positive about that new AF.

Now, everything he says in that video applies to the 70D as well. And the ''lock AF'' tip is soooo important and really makes a huge difference. By constantly holding and letting the AF-ON button of the 70D while being in AF mode you basically tell to the camera where exactly you want the focus point to be. Additionally the 70D is giving you the option to move the focus square almost anywhere in the frame (C100 can not do that) and that is really great. Even the face detection AF mode works really well, but you should be careful when you have more than one faces in your frame...camera does not know which one is your target so it can switch from one face to another. AF lock can help even here but if the faces are moving things are starting to get complicated. Another plus of the 70D is the touch screen. You can move the focus square with your finger and follow the motion on your frame. I shot a theatrical play the other time just like that. And it was fricking dark. Constant f1.8 at 1600 ISO. The editor loved me...no out of focus shots!
I wish I had the time to make a tutorial....haha...anyway if you have any questions just let me know...

I would think the AF on the 70D is better than the C100 because of the touch screen focus option. I'll bet that one day every DSLR will have that feature.
