Raylight cool?

Ok so I got my HVX now. I have a great PC and do not have oddles of more cash for a Mac FCP studio 2.0 setup. I am interested in staying with the PC for now.

BUT. My friend has Vegas 7.0a, as do I, and he says Raylight is not so cool. He says it is a system hog and that it also MAKES you keep both the MXF files and the new AVIs it creates. Apparently the MXFs are needed for the new AVIs to work right. I guess you could render out the AVIs but that sounds like a ton of useless time wasting.

He claims that it uses twice the HD space. Not too bad for a short, but what about a feature?

So $200.00 for raylight and then another $400-$600 or so for extra drives above my almost 1TB. Sounds like maybe I should sell my PC and get FCP / MAC after all.

Am I wrong?

What other solution is out there that will not kill my bank. I spent 8k so far and am close to tapped out.

Yes you're wrong. Raylight doesn't make you make AVIs at all. You can just drag 'n' drop the MXF files onto the timeline. No extra space, no wasted time.

so the only time you make the AVI is when you render a the end.

Cool, thanks Barry.
I will ask him again and see why he thinks that.

Raylight version 1 required making AVIs. Versions 2 and 3 (and all the sub-releases) do not.

I would strongly suggest updating to Vegas 7.0e, though. It's a free upgrade.

I have raylight and have never used the Raylight AVI tool. I simply drag and drop the MXF files into my timeline and edit. I even did a full edit of footage right off the card directly into Vegas and Premiere. Worked like a charm.

Just curious, what do most people use the Raylight AVI converter for now that Raylight supports drag and drop?

You could use it to create a self-contained AVI for transport to a computer which doesn't have Raylight installed.

After Effects. I do colour on all my projects in AE, and as the drag-and-drop functionality of Raylight hasn't been extended to it yet, I have to make proxies. I certainly hope native support is on the horizon. It would make my life a lot easier.

Raylight uses no system resources whatsoever so your friend is giving advice on something he has obviously never even used. In fact your Raylight avi footage will be pixel by pixel identical to the mxf version but half the data size, so it actually saves you 4 gig of resources per 8 minutes of footage. Is that resource hog? Quite the opposite in fact.

You can work with the mxf files directly or you can convert them to avis like everyone else has said. I am pc based but I work with clients who are mac based so I generally send them QT conversions of the avi/mxfs. I use AE and PP2 with my footage seamlessly.
