RAW vs. REDCODE RAW

Jannard

Red Leader
We did some direct comparison tests last night of 4k RAW footage vs. 4k REDCODE RAW footage. Both were processed and corrected the same way exactly. Then we projected both for a side by side (literally) on a 4k projector at a premium screening room in Burbank. Good news. It was virtually impossible to tell the difference, even under the closet scrutiny. We still need to push this testing further (green screen with David Stump is next) but there was quite a bit of celebration going on last night. Basically we were comparing a 27MB per frame image capture vs. 2.5MB per frame. Recording 4k REDCODE RAW to your under $1000 RED DRIVE will serve you well.

Great great news, Jim *. :dankk2: for your update.

EDIT -- * This camera is an amazing achievement, Mr. Edison. As a native european, I'd call you Monsieur Lumière but you already have one there. :)

Elo Jim,

Thanks for the news, and again comgratulation to the RED team for what you've achieved on the REDCODE! And I think you do not have finished to twik it...

At first I have heard of a 27MB/s REDCODE RAW, but now with 2.5MB per frame that's more than 27MB/s (or only at 10 images per sec). Would it be available on the RED I? And what would be the less compressed REDCODE RAW possible to record on "our under $1000 RED DRIVE"?

Sorry... 24.1MB per frame on the RAW and 2.5MB REDCODE RAW for our test last night. That was per frame.

Jim

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but Jim I was wondering if you guys were going to make either the red flash or the red drive able to record 2k raw. I'm still worried about frame rates and all. Will your flash drive be similar to the venom flashpack? I am thinking about the Viper/venom workflow: record to flash, dump to a DFR and then record out to LTO3. Is that planned to be an option for Red?

Jim,

Following your info, it means what Antoine wished to ask is fair (at least, in this presumption): 60MB/s or 480Mbps @24fps ready @RED _ONE?

If so, this would be quite more than 27MB/s...

E.

That's good news, that's literally ~10:1 compression. Wouldn't it be even more compression ratio if there're more redundancies in a scene?

@ 2,5 Mb a frame it's in the ballpark of uncompressed 4:2:2 SD @ 24 fps
for the redcode RAW - which is quite manageable. but a bit more than twice the 27 Mb/Sec.

This is a test though. Remember the 25x compressed image we were all musing around, that should be arround 12 MB/sec @ 24 fps

So what I guess this tells me is:

Testing, testing, testing, testing.

I like what I hear, though.

Yes but what I'd like to know (and maybe also Antoine) is if the RED DRIVE can handle with such data... It would be interesting to know. And if one day it will be possible to have available such variable option (what's the limit there?*) for special and short shots.

* Can you Graeme enlight us?

2K workflow

2K workflow

SF Geek,

There are four available 2K workflows -

2K RAW, compressed with REDCODE. Recorded to RED-DRIVE or REDFLASH.
This can follow the workflow you outlined. Frame rates - variable 1 - 60fps.

2K RAW, uncompressed. Recorded via high speed data port to an external custom disk array or very large RAM disk. Frame rates - variable 1 - 120fps.

2K RGB, compressed with REDCODE. Recorded to RED-DRIVE or REDFLASH.
This can follow the workflow you outlined. Frame rates - variable 1 - 60fps.

2K RGB, uncompressed. Recorded to external disk array over modified dual link HD-SDI. Frame rates 24 or 25fps. Also available, 2K cropped to 1080p.

Thanks for clearing that up Stuart. How about the 4K RAW uncompressed and REDCODE?

Is it also variables 1-60 fps?

I awoke with a big smile this morning left over from seeing redcode in action last night.. The quality of the compression is better than anything I have seen before.

That 2.5mb file just to be clear was a 4.9k compressed frame as well, not 4k, so you guys adding up the mb per second dont need to panic. the 4k Redcode Raw file will be smaller in size :)

Is it correct that the 2k RAW workflows are using the windowed mode?
I assumed that to get full-frame at anything other than the native 4.5k sensor resolution, you have to convert RAW to RGB first, then rescale.

Sounds great. Happy to hear that things are moving forward and that you guys celebrate once in a while....

Just a question about the numbers. I'm not too bright so I need thinks spelled out for me:) I thought uncompressed RAW would be somewhere around 323MB/s. 24MB pr frame would mean 578MB/s. Are these numbers for a full 4.9k frame?

it would be cool to see the comparison at the next screening. incredible stuff.

And it's an early build of the code, with a special new feature we're testing. And not, you can't ask what that is, but I think you'll like it!

Graeme

Cheers and thumbs up!

Are there planned any more european screenings before the release of the camera?

:dankk2: for your care Graeme and Jarred.

EDIT -- On that special feature, I won't ask but I'm curious. These last days, Graeme you have been a box of good news. BTW, is it allowed me a simple tip? Even if you already know this one very well I'm afraid but this will a be a real concern for the future of a majority of RED shooters:
