RAW vs. Everything Else

Now that you mention it, I did see a shootout with the FX6 RAW mode recently with the URSA 12K and the FX6 seemed to have some blocks of noise or artifacts or something when zoomed in, definitely an ugly thing that hopefully can be cleaned out with denoising but I have no idea personally. I'm sure they must not be too visible during regular viewing for Sony to not address the issue but that cut right through my personal interest in RAW out of the FX6 or A7S III after seeing that.

and just like that Mr. Birlew put the final nail in the coffin that was the dvx F35 forum. I would tell you this conversation doesn't belong here, but it appears F35 owners and users are the ones who have over stayed their welcome. See ya guys (this is not to the people in this thread but the ones maybe in the years to come who read the entire big thread) it was a fun wild ride.

Lol what!? Not at all! The thread has only gotten a few responses, give it some time. The F35 still has some interest yet as there are Facebook groups dedicated just to it but forums like DVXUser have slowed down so it requires patience sometimes.

Even in 2023, I’m interested in both the F35 and F65 and even picking up a Sony F55, FS7, and FS700 to go in the mix. I’ve seen some good work come out of all of these cameras and heard about them for quite some time, like I said I’ve almost read through this whole forum researching things. However, even on some higher end work, I’ve read that they used compressed formats or Prores/DNX and not much about working with their RAW modes other than the usual “12-bit/16-bit is nice” or the occasional feature article about using RAW with a certain camera.

For example, there’s one article I read about some time ago about the FS7 RAW mode being poor compared to the internal codec, we’ve even had a post about this in this thread that said basically the same thing, however, I remember reading some time later that a firmware update corrected this problem and made the FS7’s RAW mode much better. So it comes down to one user’s experience over another and the conversation seems to stop there with no follow up.

This thread is supposed to bring those talking points out and show more experiences with the FS7’s RAW mode as well as others and, more than that, to compare them to each other. The F35/F65 aspect is to speak to the higher end and to bring out the top end results to compare to the lower lines and see how big the difference really is. This should be an exciting topic to discuss as most of these now legacy cameras can be picked up for $3,000 or way less depending on kit and with new developments like AI upscaling, these cameras are far more usable than they ever have been before. So, let’s see the most of what they can do today now that 12-bit 4:4:4 HD and 4K RAW aren’t as much of a hassle for people to handle anymore.

In case anyone is interested, I've got a fully-loaded FS7 RAW rig that I'd like to sell.

FS7
XDCA
AXS-R5 RAW recorder
HXR-IFR5
(2) 512GB AXS cards

Everything someone needs except for batteries.

I saw a teardown that revealed that the a7siii has a quad bayer sensor with 4x as many photosites as its recorded resolution. Each square of the CFA covers a 2x2 patch of photosites. I believe this was done to save money by repurposing a sensor design they already had. The downside is that read noise is increased, which contributes to the noisy and blocky RAW output (all of which is covered up by processing trickery in-camera). I'm guessing the FX6 suffers from the same issue
