FS7: Raw to the Odyssey 7Q

Thanks for the clarification Mitch !

Hope the engineers will come up with a fix soon with a new firmware release following up. And a fixing program is a great idea too !

Cheers.

Thank you Mitch for explaining this. On a somewhat related note, will this also correct the issue of recording RAW from the FS7 to ProRes in the Odyssey?

You mean the gamma shift ? I think both are related to the way the OD7Q interprets the RAW signal in S-Log3. (if I understood correctly)

Yes, I think so -- although it seemed to me when I tried it out (on a rental) that it was more than just a gamma shift, but I could be wrong.

The two are unrelated, unless you want to call information-provided-by-Sony-in-both-cases-being-different-then-what-is-actually-happening being related. Resolve relies on the metadata but because we are performing the ProRes translation live we do not use the metadata. But the S-Log3 charting does not match the formula as presented to us by Sony, I' guessing that we just have the repeated info from the F5/F55.

Again, not to crap on Sony here. In my old job, I note that one camera manufacturer did not release the service parts manual for a certain camera until almost TWO YEARS after the camera first shipped. Try fixing something at a rental house service dept. without even knowing what board does what.

I've got a film shoot starting on Feb 14th and I'm now wondering what the best way to acquire footage is going to be, either with my 7Q or internally.

We will always make sure to have a path to make your footage appear at its best. We don't want you to be afraid to use your Odyssey7Q+.

You can take the output of the FS7 from the HD-SDI or from the HDMI. Either will give you ProRes and be an improvement over the internal codec. HDMI will even give you UHD. The only issues currently are with the RAW output from the extension back.

I don't doubt that for a second Mitch, but in lieu of a firmware fix happening in the next 2 weeks, any pointers on best practice ahead of starting production would be gratefully received closer to the time.

Cheers,

Ben

I don't have a '+' so HDMI is out for me.

I was intending to either shoot 4K RAW or 4k Pro Res via the extension.

If you choose to shoot RAW then we will have a translation solution to effectively make a copy of your RAW files that will work properly. That would be the solution for anything shot RAW in the next several weeks until our next firmware update.

In creating 4K ProRes files, the Odyssey does not utilize the color matrix information that is effecting Resolve. Therefore there is no magenta cast to the image. So 4K ProRes works quite well today. At issue is the S-Log3 files are not delivering with as flat a gamma profile as they should be, but they are still flatter than REC709 and are highly gradable. This is an excellent way to shoot today. Just a small amount of exposure testing beforehand should make one quite comfortable shooting in this fashion to achieve excellent imaging.

It is important to know that while we take these issues very seriously and are working to make everything function perfectly, the combination of FS7, XDCA back and Odyssey7Q/7Q+ can work very well today. One should not be discouraged from using it.

Hi Mitch,

Yes, I intend to shoot 4K RAW in the next few weeks so a translation solution is very much welcomed !

I have no fears shooting with the FS7 + OD7Q in RAW except one. And I hope you will work out a smart solution for it. What I fear is that your workaround will create a new set of .dng files that will fill disk space.

I hope that the fix will "patch" directly the .dng files without creating new ones.

Cheers.

I will voice your concern to the engineers, but I sincerely doubt that we would restructure your files. Instead we would most likely create new master file copies with the corrected metadata. Once you confirm the files are functioning properly you could consider them your new source originals and delete the earlier versions. This is by far the easier to program and the fastest to execute both for us and for your computer to complete the task.

Hello Mitch, I am debating with myself if I should keep the 7Q for my FS7 or sell it. I used it happily with the FS700 but now, I am waiting for my FS7 and I am not sure how big the improvement over XAVC-I 4k would be. Since there is this issue going on right now, there is hardly any test footage out there that compares XAVC-I with 7Q Prores.

Do you have any good comparisons?

ALso, when will this "translation software for RAW" be released?

Thanks in advance!
