RAW Settings for 7D

I'm curious as to if there is any benefit to shooting Video while the RAW settings are turned on. I know it doesn't actually shoot RAW but it does make files sizes of the video clips much larger.

Does anybody know if it's better to shoot Video with the RAW settings on or am i waisting HD space?

Yeah it's pretty weird, every time I shoot video with the raw settings active, I get a little blinking icon that says "F U scarlet!" on the LCD. Pretty weird.

RAW has nothing to do with video on this camera. Are you SURE the video files (and only the video files) are bigger? You're not just seeing more storage used from shooting a RAW photo during video recording?

The video files are actually larger when shooting with the RAW setting for photos on selected. So.... I don't know what to tell you.

OMG- you must have discovered a secret RAW shooting mode Canon is trying to keep hidden. Hallelujah.

I just tried something.

Started with a cleanly formatted card for each.

Shot 720/60 video for roughly 5 seconds then checked storage.

RAW: 28.4MB

Large format JPEG: 31.2MB

My take is the difference lies in the fact that the clips aren't exactly the same length. Either way, having the camera in RAW for stills mode definitely didn't produce a larger video file.

Just out of curiosity does your 7D say "RED" on the side of it and seem a little large for an SLR?

Okay. Try this.

Put a 16gb memory card in the 7D, format it, set it for RAW, shoot only 12 minute video with it until you've filled the entire card and can't shoot any more. Fill it up.

Then put another 16gb memory card in, format that, set it for Jpeg, and shoot only 12 minute video with that card as well until you've filled the entire card and can't shoot any more. So you fill that card too.

Now, check and compare exactly how much space is left on both cards.

What's weird is that if you fill your CF card up with NOTHING but video footage that was shot while the RAW setting is on, it will use up space on your card MUCH faster. So even though the video files are the same size as they are when shot with the L-Jpg setting, you cut your card space in half.... Explanations?

Do the test. Post results.
