C200: Raw Lite export for off-site colorist?

Hi all,

I'll try and explain what I think is clear, but if not feel free to challenge me. I also didn't find an answer from other searches.

I am shooting with the c200 in Raw Lite and ultimately will be editing in Premiere but send my footage to an off-site colorist in a location that wouldn't be convenient to ship hard drives.

Most of our production is finished in HD so we just send him a ProRes 422 file of the edit (minus graphics etc.) and he works off that. I'm wondering though for this project and future ones where we are shooting 4K raw lite and finishing 4k, the ideal situation would be to get the raw footage to him vs. our normal workflow. So, I'm wondering is there a way to essentially do something like media management where I can send only the clips or portions of clips I need colored vs. having to send an entire Raw file for each shot I use in the Canon .CRM format?

Or is my best bet still to export a Pro Res (at correct resolution) and still have a high quality file for him to work with, just not raw?

thanks much as always!

If you don't want to ship drives I'd send a Prores 4444 file to color - I really don't see any other way without shipping physical drives.

For what it's worth I gave my colorist on my last short film the option to link to all of the original .crm files and he preferred the prores option.

To my knowledge there's no discernible difference in quality between the C200's .crm files and a Prores 4444 file (the prores will actually be a bigger file size)

Thanks Chris. I think that's what we'll end up doing. Realistically the ProRes 4444 files would probably be more than enough, and easier to create and send. I suppose it's just a matter of wanting to have access to the original metadata but I think everything is shot properly as far as white balance and exposure so we should be good. I appreciate the response.

You could send them basically anything in a log format - 720 prores, or even 720 H264

They then colour in REsolve and send you the DRP (project)

You then import the project and relink to your raw.

Full quality, no large file transfers.

Interesting. I usually send a complete cut and get the same in return. I don't edit in Resolve (and rarely work in it) so would that be an issue? I have a version of it but not pro version so not sure how that night sync up with someone else's project.

You dont have to be in Resolve.

You should be able to export and EDL or something, it basically works between different software.

So you could cut in X while they work in Y

In terms of bang-for-buck in quality vs. file size and still fast to edit, a QuickTime container (.mov) with the Cineform codec has been working really well. I think you'll find that Cineform YUV 10-bit will provide sufficient quality and smaller files vs. ProRes (haven't tested non-alpha content exported to 4444 to see if space is wasted for a non-existent alpha channel). I recently reduced 1DX II 4K 422 8-bit files to 1080p 10-bit Cineform and the files were much smaller and still looked excellent (wavelet compression doesn't have macroblock edges). This was so I could upload the clips for online download after which they'd send back the project file to use with the originals. They didn't need 4K and were happy with the quality of the 10-bit wavelet HD files + had no trouble editing (older Mac that can't handle 4K)- they used the supplied files for their final render.
