Raw 7D video to Pro Res via MPEG Streamclip filesizes

Hey all,

so I shot a music video today in 1080p and then put the files on my macbook. The raw H.264 files played back fine in QT but were stuttery in FCP - which is to be expected I suppose, considering H.264 is not a good editing codec.

Anyway, I then used MPEG Streamclip to transcode the files to Apple Pro Res 422 - the files were stuttery in QT but played back fine in FCP. However, these Pro Res files were almost four times as big as the raw h.264 files in terms of hard drive space - is this right?

Thanks!

OK, thanks!

So given that workflow, what are the correct sequence/export settings I should be using in FCP for that codec?

I'm also beginning to get the grips with the footage, but what do you want to export? A Master HD file, or a DVD file? For master HD, I would see in sequence settings if the prores codec is selected as "Progressive". It tends to have "upper" field in some scenarios. This is not good for your sequence. In fact, make sure the sequence setting has "no fields" and progressive selected.

For SD DVD, what I do is export the Master HD file and then reimport it in a new sequence in FCP with Uncompressed 8BIT Pal, no fields selected. Then I export through compressor with the 90 Minutes High Quality preset. This is how I'm doing right now, and has produced fine results. But there could be better workflows. I do this to preserve the 4:3 aspect ratio and keep the top and bottom letterbox lines.

For SD 16:9 DVD's, simply export the master Prores HD sequence through compressor. I always export 4:3 SD because some old DVD players do not recognize 16:9 encoding and simply stretch 16:9 DVD's to fit a 4:3 Screen. This is not good for productions that are to be displayed with live audiences.

When you converted them in Mpeg streamclip with same frame sizes, frame rates then there's nothing you have to do.

When you drop the first clip into your timeline fcp wil ask you to match the sequence.

Export quicktime with current settings will give you a master file of your timeline.
Use other formats for other output needs.
