Randomly Changing Gamma

Hey Guys,

I read this forum all the time. I do own a 7D and I do think it's an incredible camera for the cost - I do LOVE the look I'm getting out of it with my 1.4 nikons - and I do see it's serious limitations. I own a RED - but most of the time, for me, it hasn't been as practical a camera to use.

I just shot something today (great thing about 7D is I have my full rig in a backpack. We shot - and pretty well covered - 20 pages in 5 hours... all pre lit.)

BUT - looking at the footage, it seems like the detail in the blacks is wildly different from take to take depending on where I'm shooting from. I was in M mode and using that basic, no sharpening low contrast setting people seem to talk about - but some glitch or some automatic gamma thing was happening.

I was shooting at 1250 iso (because mostly natural interior lighting, but in the future I think I'll give it a little more help and shoot at 800)

It did look like a gamma shifting thing by the way.

Does anyone know anything about this please???

ALL The Best,

Gc

I know... different camera... but, on my 5D I disable the following: Auto Lighting Optimizer, Peripheral Illumination Correction, Highlight Tone Priority, and Noise reduction.

I'm just afraid weird banding and odd noise is going to show up if I enable any of it. I have done a few tests on my own, but nothing with charts or too scientific.

Everyone got it right: Canon IMO really screwed up with the 5D MkII and 7D by releasing a manual mode that wasn't completely manual by default. This totally frustrated and confused me as well. Turn off all that's mentioned above; my 7D isn't with me now but I seem to recall an "automatic exposure compensation" thing I turned off as well, but don't quote me on that.

Thanks Guys. The Auto Lighting Optimizer was off. Highlight Tone Priority was on (silly me), I don't know what Peripheral Illumination Correction is or where it is in the menu and Noise reduction was set to low (now off).
