Ralph Lauren commercial shot with 5D MII

hendrix

hendrix

it kinda like the concept .... any body with an electric guitar and a stack of marshalls can distort and feedback, but not many can pull off the star spangled banner that is still listenable 40 years later ... there are few images in that commercial that striking even if they are our of focus ... the one where there is a person with long hair leaning to one side ... you watch the movement and wait for it to rack into focus but it never comes ... but you sit there and watch the movement .....

BTW how guitar players does it take to screw in a light bulb .... 10 . one to change the bulb and 9 to stand around saying i could have done it better

change guitar players to DVX forum members if you want

Thank god someone else said what I was thinking ever since the hatchets rolled out this thread.

You spoke my mind Mr. Brody! Thanks.......

The video looks a little shaky to me, but the concept works. Like others mentioned, just the fact that the 5DM2 is used in a high end commercial speaks volumes.

Just so you know; the shaky movements, the motion, the narrow DOF look, the color grading were all chosen by the artists, and are not mistakes. However their creative choices mandated by whoever was the final decisions makers. Why can't we just stop this micro slicing, and just let it be as it is. A commercial. Commercials have always done the extremes is both directions.

Now my theory for the look of the narrow DOF and the isolated look for the characters in this piece.

Young love is often experienced in an almost vacuum; where the world around them is just a blur of no concern.. These two are immersed in this moment, wrapped in a veil of one another. Being atop of the building is an expression of how also young lovers think that their existence and love is all that matters, and is above all. They believe they're the first to ever really have true love... This building of concrete and cement represents a form of cloud nine. Way above everyone else, they live in a hallucinogenic experience, with one another. It's dreamy feel is that, just a dream. It's not reality. However the young lovers don't know this yet. Us the viewer knows that they'll hate each other in a year or so ( maybe even a week ) from now, when the Sh#T hits the fan and the love is now just pure hate or disgust for one another......However for now, there just in a dreamworld all onto themselves, alone, in a narrow field of blur!

Now after years of research, try&error and many $$$ we are able to stabilize any camera in every enviroment and keep it perfect balance. With shoulder mounts, elaborate treepods, expensive fluidheads, more expensive gear heads, remote heads, stadycams andwhatnot.

We have cameras that can deliver high resolution, full format, low light, super sharp pictures.

We have film schools, academies, books, teachers, forums, tutorials and any information possible on the internet regarding blocking, framing, directing, lihting andwhatnot.

And what do I see most of the time? What winns at all the film festivals? What is super en vouge?

Shaky, handheld, over the top colorgraded, not lit, blury, out of focus, strange framed and somehow unmotivated, deformed flicks.

I wish I would find some idiot like Ralph Lauren who pays me for doing sometig like that.
I would make more money on a monday afternoon on a roof top withot any expensive gear than a canon and a 50/1,3 lens , than I make in a month right now.

I gues my problem is, I got ether the wrong connections or I´m not pretentiously or self-consciously artsy enough to talk someone into somethiing like that.

This too shall pass.

nothing special about this video.. take out those obscure modelish-looking man & woman and this will take on the look of your run-of-the-mill 5D test video..

Idiot.... Really!

Well when your 69 years old, lets see if your worth over 5.5 billion, and have created a globally known corporation that will most likely still exists after you have passed on.

Life is just light passing on through......

Funny how humanity chooses to exist; racing each other in a paralless attempt to out win, outwit one another for some illusionary medal of honor that in someway makes one feel that they're better then the ones they've passed by in a race that really has no finish line. 110 billion+ have perished off this planet in earths human history, however 99.9999999% of those are not known for a single atom of who they were, or what they contributed to this planet in this infinite universe. If somehow your part of that 0.0000000001% of the 110 billion+ to even be documented in some form of historical record; it's an absolute miracle.

We should never forget, that we're all nothing but mere moments of passing light in the scope of this vast universe; that for the 99.9999999% just goes on by, to never be seen again or remembered by the near future that follows us......

So at this moment of space and time that we all occupy. Just sit back and relax, and enjoy all that's around us. Cause your only racing the light of yourself, passing on through........

Oi... kay calm down everyone.

This is what happens when people are told they can't express how they truly feel about something. This thread probably would have died after the first page had hands not been slapped.

The video is better than most people can do here, get out and shoot instead of talking about what other people do, stop hating, keep negative thoughts to yourself, don't be mean be nice and everything else.

They did what they did and it's their choice, horse is dying.

Let's just drop it and move on to the next MKii video.

...so true...even for Ralph Lauren.

"Do you think a greater thinking thing will give a damn that Man was here?"

By the way, Isaac is right though. Better way to comment would have been to go to Vimeo and ask "Why did you do it this way?" Or "What was the reason?"

So, yeah, lack of a specific tact even on my part. Honesty can be worded properly either way.

Me go eat now.

Is DVXuser really that bad? :cheesy:

Seriously, overcastsky, some models, nice location with limited colors to beginn with, standard postpro - I thought it was a spec commercial.
But I liked it, don´t need those "Sth funny happens, so I luogh and hopefully connect this happy feeling to the brand" commercials.
Didn´t like the leaningtotheside outoffocus shot though....
But what great images at this low pricetag!

I was being passive aggressive. I don't even agree with that statement I made but I do think that this thread's out of hand and that the best benefit to the content creator would have been to ask him or her the motives behind the method to understand why.

Not to say how it should have been done.

Bad me.

I liked it. Has a lot of mood and style, everything about it feels designed and thought out. The majority of the shots are soft and out of focus, but it seems intentional and expressive in it's own way.

I don't think the shaky hand held shots complemented the composition but overall an easy 7.5/10 from me.

Sorry folks, but I still think it looks like crap.

Why? Because it's a bag of empty tricks.

Why? because they don't need a shallow focus shot of the railing with nothing going on, especially since we have already seen it earlier. Why? because the grading is boring, heavyhanded and a cliche at this point. Why? because there is no development of the subjects and it goes nowhere really. It is filled with a series of fashion cliches (I should know I've been shooting fashion for the last 20 years - God help me) and it's visual vocabularly does not surprise. It is overly enamored with shallow focus and in two years everyone will be able to place it precisely on the timeline of old-fashioned. Speaking of which, what exactly is the motivation for the vignetting?

I say use this stuff sparingly and for a reason, so that when you do, you can underline what you have to say that much more powerfully.

KISS
KEEP. IT. SIMPLE and STRONG

LOL........

Squig,

How are you liking your 5DMII lucky one?

.

lovin it so far. stills are amazing. video is everything I wanted the D90 to be. just waiting for my panasonic anamorphic adapter and a few lenses, filters and adapters before I can give it a really good workout. I'm blown away by the low light performance I didn't expect it to be that much better than the D90.

My proacademic opinion....I liked it (nice chicks)

"Quad Core Computer and Solid State Drive (new) For Sale"
