Sorry, I think it looks like crap. Heavy handed use of a bleach bypass style look in post and a pointless shot of a narrow focus on a metal railing. Yes I know she is metaphorically supposed to be a bird perched to take off into the sky but come on. Narrow focus is a wonderful thing, but do we have to beat people around the head with it?

It's become an obsession, a fetish even and therefore unhealthy.
People need to step back a bit and see shallow DoF for what it is, an artistic tool to be used when needed, but which becomes samey when overdone.
I'm off to shoot everything at f/64 :)

Um...mostly Large-format lenses
My 12" f/6.3 Dalmayer Perfac goes to f/64, while my 480 f/8 goes to f/96 (!). My 240 f/5.6 Symmar and 90 f/5.6 Super Angulon "only" go to f/45.
Actually my last comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, refering to the legendary Group F/64 of the Thirties.

Agreed all the way. Not to mention that there's pretty much no substance anyway.

Zzzzz

Isn't that almost a requirement for every fashion/cologne spot?

Lmfao. No not really. There's substance in Fashion and Beauty Marketing, just seems like less than the rest. But, because of that, not being on the level with the rest makes it even that much more boring.

I've only worked on (from concept to completion) a few fashion and beauty IP's myself so I would only know from my limited experience, but that's my take on it.

I hate to say it, but it looks like those 35mm adapter tests people do when they first get their adapters. Except there's sullen people in the frame looking brutish towards the camera.

You can have shallow DOF for one person in the frame, but having a whole cast and action, a set and dialogue stuff - you realize that you need a deeper stop than T1.3 more often than not (and lenses generally perform optimally around T4-T8).

Yeah I agree, it looks terrible for a Ralph Lauren advert (is it a real one?) And I found the bokeh really ugly and distracting, like it's drunken double vision. I don't mind the bleach bypass or blue though, I think those colours are cool.

Despite what everyone thinks of those adverts, they usually have more depth (in more ways than one as you said). Most I've seen have that lovely gliding dreamy feel and more flattering lights on their faces. The models here look miserable and old

Ah just read it's for an internet page. Well that makes more sense, guess it's still better than the odd photo/banner.

Haha. Look at all of the vimeo comments. They all praise it and say it is exceptional.

I have to agree with you as far as my analysis of it as a commercial overall, however, I liked some of the individual shots. If this was a "Playing with DOF" video, not as many people would say anything about it.

These are the same people that sit in coffeehouses scribbling in their journals while watching to see if other people are watching them scribbling in their journals.

I'd love to see people do better than this, just to play devil's advocate. It's way too easy to throw stones from glass houses. I think it's pretty amazing what can be done with a 2500 dollar camera, and I think the photographers who are used to shooting and lighting with DSLR's are going to give the camcorder videographers a run for their money.

Thank god someone else said what I was thinking ever since the hatchets rolled out this thread.

You spoke my mind Mr. Brody! Thanks.......

Over all I liked it, nice looking grading and nice feel with the music. I was surprised to see the RL logo at the end, I'm no expert but I didn't think it was up to standards for that type of a company; like I said, I'm no expert, that's just a gut reaction at seeing the logo. The super shallow was overdone for me and if half the shots had deeper focus, it would have felt better and maybe felt higherend instead of just someone on a rooftop testing DoF. Overall very good and a few simple things could really push it to the next level, but right now the constant super shallow DoF makes it feel almost claustraphobic even.

Right, and I think the people slamming this piece are the ones that arbitrarily put a gun in every one of their short films...

I really don't see where all this vitriol is coming from. If you don't like the content of ads like this.. great, but to bash the image quality and the people who like it, is something else altogether.

Personally, I think what this guy pulled off is some of the best looking footage I've seen shot with this camera, and I put myself in the category of people who have yet to understand a Chanel #5 ad.

F*ck yeah!

F*ck yeah!

That shi* was pretty f*cking beautiful.

So awesome it was shot not with the 50 f1.2 L but the $300 50 f1.4!

Yes!

Natural light, a rooftop, some models, and $2800 camera and lens combo to shoot a goddamned Ralph Lauren commercial!

This thing is being taken seriously!

:thumbup::thumbup: Well said.
I hit the "like" button on the vimeo page and I don't even drink coffee so :nads:
