Ok, so decided to start a thread for the feature we are planning. The movie titled "Rain" is based off our Westfest entry, we had so much fun making a western. Having been inspired by Faith Granger, my film making buddy Brett and I will be shooting this feature on a "zero" budget or close to it. I think it’s very much possible due to shooting out in the wilderness and not having to pay for locations. We are currently ironing out the script and production is set for this summer/fall. We are looking to acquire a Red One for this project, if not we’ll shoot on our old stand by cameras, the HVX and a GH1. Rain is a supernatural shoot'em up style movie with some influence from John Woo.

Poster coming soon.

Synopsis: A hired gunman takes on a job to track down a runaway. On his mission he encounters a mysterious indian who gives him a new purpose. A tail of revenge and redemption.

DIRECTOR: Jason Sanders
WRITERS/EDITORS: Jason Sanders/Brett Draper

Now I'm starting to think of the business side of things. Ive heard westerns dont sell real good in the foreign market. Is there a real market for westerns?

Merely an opinion, but making a zero budget feature without any name actors, chances are your best bet for a future with the film is going through the festival route. Chances are this film will be made more out of a love for filmmaking and the want to make your first feature than it being made to recoup it's investment and then some.

If zero budget means no crew, I'd personally stick with the small form factor cameras over the Red One. Trudging around the wilderness with that cam sounds like a nightmare without a dedicated camera crew and potentially an on site editing/offload station.

Best of luck with the project, it takes guts to make a feature, kudos.

One last thought... looking over your reel on Vimeo, the longest film on there is under 6 mins (you may have made longer films so please feel free to ignore if you have). Not that you cannot do it, but the difference between a 5 min film and a 90min film are astounding. This isn't my advice, but advice I heard from an Oscar winner: Instead of spending your hard earned money on an ok 90min feature film, why not spend it on making an amazing 30min short film. Why not consider making a 30min version of your feature, get that into major festivals and meet people that can help make your feature version into something bigger than a micro-budgeter.

Thanks for the advice Staven. I agree, the more I looked at the Red the more i realized it wouldnt be a good cam to use for this project. Now Im leaning toward the AF100. I havent made any shorts longer then 6 min, but I feel its time to start on a feature. It will be for the love of filmmaking like you said. I do plan to practice with a few more shorts before we start this project.
