R.I.P Tony Scott

My mother died of brain cancer. It was like watching someone die in slow motion. Seeing what she went through, I place no judgement on him choosing to end his life this way. Probably better for him and his family.

I too have seen my Wife's Aunt slowly losing her motor skills then speech until she became a vegetable due to brain cancer. It it a gut wrenching sad journey not only for the patient but for the family as well.

RIP
Were Clarence Odbody on that bridge, Tony Scott coulda seen a world deprived of NeedForSpeed's, You'rePartEggplant's & IWishYouHadMoreTime.

I agree with Mike though; I wouldn't go out like that (brain cancer).
Yessir, Monty, I'd take what's behind door #3...

Some random, some sad thoughts:

  • I didn't know Ridley was Tony's older brother (call me clueless?)
  • Batutta- sorry about your mother. My father died in slow motion from lung cancer (that spread to his brain) for 9 months.
  • I wonder how one chooses the bridge method? It's the choice for a rock climber like Scott? Less gruesome than family discovering your body with a gunshot? No access to pills? Jack Kevorkian's dead?
  • I've only seen "Top Gun" and "Crimson Tide." What should I watch tonight- "Unstoppable," "Days of Thunder or "True Romance"?
  • Though Scott had not filmed on the bridge, many movies were shot there including, perhaps ironically... "To Live and Die in LA..."

"The biggest edge I live on is directing. That's the most scary, dangerous thing you can do in your life.
The scariest thing in my life is the first morning of production on all my movies.
It's the fear of failing, the loss of face and a sense of guilt that everybody puts their faith in you and not coming through."

Dear Klül S.,
()

Screen his entire body of work. Seriously. I always said that, in some ways, the younger Brother Scott was more consistent than Ridley. No, his films never quiiite reached the "classic" status of an Alien, a Blade Runner or a Gladiator (all three of which are in my Top 100 btw)...but every one of Tony's pictures is damned solid in its own right. An underrated filmography to be sure; much like that of Zemeckis...

I am sad and shocked to hear this news.

Both of the Scott brothers films were very influential on me in terms of just entertainment value and sparking an interest in filmmaking. Alien, Blade Runner, The Hunger, Legend, Top Gun, Black Rain, and True Romance all blew my silly young mind when I first saw them (maybe I shouldn't have seen some of these at a younger age, but too late now). The utter dark and gritty awe and mystique of Alien and The Hunger, the jolt of adrenaline that was Top Gun, and the amazing characters of Blade Runner and True Romance will always stick with me.

We also can't forget the lighter but awesome popcorn flicks that Tony Scott specialized in. Great action comedies like Beverly Hills Cop II (equal to the original and with better cinematography too) and The Last Boy Scout. Crimson Tide was another good one, and in my mind the true sequel to The Hunt For Red October (in that both were about shipboard espionage elements on a nuclear submarine).

True Romance is of course awesome. Every character was very vivid, not only in the writing but the acting and the directing of each one of them. Even the bit parts like Brad Pitt's slacker sitting on a couch acting stoned ouf of his mind. It would have been great to have seen Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott team up again for another film. The Hunger is one of the best vampire movies ever made, and doesn't get the attention it truly deserves among the vampire and overall horror genres.

A very tragic and sad day for the Scott family.

RIP Tony Scott. And prayers and condolences to Ridley and the rest of their family and friends.

I know what you're saying Callaghan, the (insert baseball metaphor here) solid double/triple hitter vs swing for the fences, sometimes hitting it out of the park, more often not...

Thanks jg for the tip on Enemy of the State.
Always sad when somebody's death makes you look more closely at their work... (see: Van Gogh)

So now they are saying it wasn't inoperable brain cancer...puzzling.

Looks like this is the part where we all just stop speculating. None of us have any idea of what happened. Should probably wait for things to die down and see what comes out. You know one of these stories will get verified by the family sooner or later.

Strange yesterday just before the night began I spoke with a friend of mine about Man on fire..only to read the news online a few hours later.
Didnt know him personally ofcourse but still he was on our mind when he passed away.
R.I.P. Tony Scott
