quicktime X crushing blacks bug

I've found a bug in Quicktime X, it's crushing the blacks on the H.264 files out of the MKII and I presume the 7D too. Quicktime 7 can be installed and run in snow leopard and it doesn't crush blacks. I've reported the bug to Matt over at cinema 5D, he's a quicktime beta tester. Prores/fcp still only relies on quicktime 7 so the bug isn't a problem for editing and rendering.

Yeah I noticed that on my 7d footage too, really ugly stuff. But someone else thought it was CC and actually liked it lol. Quicktime 7 is a must.

Ugh, I do not like this new Quicktime X player. I mean certain things are nice, but I often find myself going back to 7. So it's clipping 0-16 and 235-256 again, huh?

try trancoding the footage into prores 422 HQ. the information in the blacks come back

Yeah it's only an issue if you're previewing footage in quicktime X. prores files and fcp previews are not affected if you're running snow leopard.

The gamma shift can be fixed inside QuickTime Pro without re-compressing your video by simply changing a few settings.

Open it up in QuickTime and select “Show Movie Properties.” Highlight the video track then click on the “Visual Settings” tab. Towards the bottom left you should see “Transparency” with a drop-down box next to it. Select “Blend” from the menu then move the “Transparency Level” slider to 100%. Choose “Straight Alpha” from the same drop-down and close the properties window and finally “Save.”
