Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

Any idea when this new firmware will be coming out? I have 2 QSDV180's here that aren't working. The firewire on one of them is supposedly fried, and the other one just keeps getting corrupted files. I'm going to be exchanging them for some new ones, but want to make sure that they have the new firmware. They should make these drives like the firestore drives. Downloadable firmware updates from the net. I'm pretty frustrated with these drives. I "supposedly" recorded an event for 1 1/2 hours using the method where it records to tape and QS at the same time "thank god!". I pushed record, and it started doing it's thing..red light on, and that little blue light turned purple on the top. When the event was done, I pushed record on the camera to stop both, but the light on the QS stayed red, and still a purple light on. So i pushed the record button on the QS to stop it, and it wouldn't turn off! So the only thing I could do was turn the thing off. That was probably a bad idea, because when i hooked it up to the comptuer later, no file! There must be a certain amount of time that I have to wait after recording for awhile or something. Maybe it's writing buffered data or something, but I waited 3 minutes or so! The new firmware better fix this. I got it all on tape, in LP, but it's on tape!:) It actually didn't look that bad, and the client was happy.

Hey Jarred,

How long until the forum filter starts substituting "wee wee" for "quickstream"? ;D

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

ha ha.. I was going to put Barry Green in there.. so for example:

After talking to Arnie, they are fully willing to work with us to make things right. To those that have given up in frustration with BARRY GREEN, hopefully in the near future things will change and you might give them another shot.

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

Well, I believe MCE deserves some slack to get it right--make good to those who purchased duds.

QC is tough to do these days with so much outsourcing. I don't think we're being hard on them. DVX helped get their product rolling. And hopefully improved via dvx.user feedback and problems. It's still a killer idea. I'm just not so sure I'd want to automatically disable the tape drive--as some have suggested--when using QS. Backup is not necessarily redundancy. It makes me wonder about future memory card camcorders. There had better be firmware feedback that ensures something is recorded somewhere or one could easily be SOL. It's a dusty bumpy world.

True, lots of camera protocols a problem. Panasonic is proprietory, not LANC. No doubt a challenge.

I'm optimistic. And I'll wait...because my time is valuable too. I'd rather not spend it solving firmware/hardware problems outside 'ordinary' NLE challenges.

Let's stay posted and current.

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

I agree,

I paid good money for these drives, trusting that they're a good product. If I have to keep sending the drives back until they get it right, I will. I'll just stick with tapes in the meantime.

I wanted to resurrect this thread in light of the new camera.

The QuickStream site says the device can handle DVCPRO formats. Does this mean, with a firmware update, that it might be able to handle DVCPRO HD@ 100mbps? Might it then be another "until the P2 price drops from the stratosphere" option? And an option for event videographers who need an hour of runtime or more? How long would their 60GB version record @ DVCPROHD100?

And have they resolved all of their QC issues? Not that more won't surface at much higher data rate recording formats. Since the doomsday warnings a year ago, I haven't heard much about MCE's hd-recording contender. Their reputation was trashed--but have they turned the corner yet? I think I could be quite forgiving if the thing was reliable!

Yeah, this thread is interesting regarding the DVCPRO HD format and the HVX. I emailed them about it, if the drives would support the format, and i have not gotten an answer yet. THe site says it supports DVCPRO but not specific if its DVCPRO 50 and HD.

I also learned their drives are 4200RPM, which may not be fast enough, i would think they would need to be 5400 or 7200RPM to handle DVCPRO HD. But one could always buy their cheapest drive the 20GB model, open it and swap it with a newer off the shelf laptop 2.5 inch 5400RPM drives that are up to 100GB for a fraction of the cost of their largest capacity unit. And i know 7200RPM drives at 80GB are available too. Of course you will void any warranty.

I'd say it's doubtful. DVCPRO is a 25-megabit-per-second format, just like DV. I would be highly skeptical about the idea of the QuickStream supporting a higher format -- even the brand-new FireStore FS-4 is apparently limited to 40mbps.

The drive is one thing, but also the processing hardware would need to be able to handle the higher data stream, and then there's the question of the firewire connection itself: the original firewire spec called for 100-megabit transfer speeds. Is that what they're using? If so, I wouldn't think there'd be a chance that you'd have reliable service if you're using the cable to 100% of its capacity.

You can experiment, but it sure seems like we'd need to wait for a design that was engineered specifically around the HVX's higher requirements.

I dont quite agree, the Panasonic AJ-HD1200A (DVCPRO HD) deck also uses a standard Firewire connection and cable and it has no problem transfering the 100mbs data to a laptop/computer. I would think a firmware upgrade and a slightly faster RPM drive should do it.

I have had 2 of the QS on back order for the past 3 months. I just wanted to use them in the studio to back up my tape. Does anyone have any info on why these things are so far back ordered or if they have been discontinued? Has anyone else had this trouble?

Two QS, one good, one bad.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I film all day (6-8 hrs.) seminars for our office and recently bought a couple 6hr. Quickstreams. One of the drives arrived without the silver cam adapter which seemed odd, so I decided to use it as the second drive. I filmed 3/4 of the day with drive 1 and then the rest with this second drive. The first drive worked flawlessly using the .mov format and FCE. The second drive however had 2 corrupt files at the end and was missing the last 5 or so minutes of footage. This meant that about 15 minutes of the end of the day was not available from the QS. Luckily I used minidv as well. During the copying of the files to my hard drive I got the error message telling me about the corruption and then ALL the files on this drive just disappeared. The drive still show that the drive space was used up though. I then filmed some more with it at work and found I could not see these new files but that the hard drive space was used up in this new footage. With the part missing and the way this drive acted I'm beginning to wonder if this was a returned/repaired drive. I'm going to return it for replacement. As mentioned the other drive worked flawlessly with the majority of the day filmed on it. I like how you can use the drives record button and minidv as a backup. I got into the habit of using this button instead of the cam to control the QS, I felt I had better control this way.
