Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

in my tests, i had problems w/ the record light on as well as the light turning from blue to purple. 3 drives gone bad for me was enough. i spent over $1800 including the 3 hour batteries. i shot a 3 hour+ play in april and these drives failed miserably for me. i ended up capturing from all 10 tapes. sorry, these drives aren't ready for primetime. get your refund and save the time and headache.

Could you be more specific? Was the red record light and purple light on together? Was the red record light and blue light on together?

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

the red record light was on as well as the blinking purple light on top signifying that footage is being recorded(so i thought).

That would be it. So far, I have not had a problem when the drive activity light is purple.

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

damn I need that new firmware.. that solves the question if it will buffer tape changes.

Have you gotten the new firmware yet?
Just talked with Arnie today....wonderful guy. He says that once communication is established, the QS should respond to the camera's record button without fail. You should turn on the camera's power first and cycle the QuickStream's power, if communication is not established.

BTW...he is sending me a new firmware update which causes the QS to ignore a "record start/stop" signal following an end of tape signal. This will permit changing tapes without interupting recording to the QS.
Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

I have a worse problem than any of you. My Quickstream ruined the firewire on my camera. My computer no longer acknowledges my DVX100ae PAL. Now I can't even capture, I am not sure what I am going to do. I can't go and borrow a camera from someone else to capture with because I have pal and I am in the LA where everyone else has NTSC. This is a nightmear situation.

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

Bena,

I'll try to let you know when I get the firmware. I thought it was ready for release, but they are certifing it now, and supposedly will be released in a few days.

I hope this isn't going to be like the windows software, which still hasn't been released.

I don't think there is a buffer. What is being recorded while changing tapes is only being captured to the drive.

That is a pretty strong claim. Can you be more specific as to how it ruined it, and how you know it was the cause?

interesting. when i returned my drives last month, they asked me if i wanted to try upgrading the firmware which would solve my problems. yet one month later, another firmware update?!

That wouldn't necessarily be unusual for any computer component. Think about how often video card drivers are updated. Besides, this firmware update ads features, and maybe addresses function-ability.

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

heh heh Scott...MCE should pay you for damage control, you seem pretty defensive of their product. I talked to Arnie yesterday, and he does say things should be on track again soon after the firmware comes out.

I guess I've been around the block a few times with this DV stuff, and every manufacturer has growing pains with new products. Drop into the Canopus Forums, if you want to see some **** hitting the fans.

My only complaint so far with QS is that initial communications are not established 100% of the time when firing up. There are so many different cameras and protocols out there, that I am willing to be patient with them for perfection. In the meantime, it seems to work for me.

MCE also fessed up to some bad boards early on, that's why I waited 8 weeks for mine. I'm guessing that most of the bad units mentioned here sadly came from that production run.

It is a well thought out unit, and if mine continues to perform as it has, I will be happy.

He he ... I guess I do sound like damage control! ;D

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

good to have a forum about all this. Timing may work out for me as I plan to buy QS in July. Keep the info coming... Sorry some had to be part of the test group for me...

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

yes.. the product concept is incredible. Version 2, or a major firmware upgrade will make the Quickstream a no-brainer

One good thing is that Sony even wrote into the new code of Vegas 5 that gargbled headers that the MCE puts in the DV files.. its good to see software and hardware guys working together.

I was using the Quickstream, which was really buggy and having battery problems and not recording all the time etc.  The two main lights started flashing like they never did before, alternating like police car lights and my firewire never worked since.  The people at quickstream didn't really dispute my claim.  I don't really have proof, but I was connected to the quickstream when my camera's firewire went out.  It isn't proof, but a dam good assumption.  I checked my firewire on 2 different computers (one pc, one mac) with 2 different cables and neither acknowledged my camera.  I didn't want to hook the quickstream up to my computer for fear of frying my firewire card and having an extra expanse.  I asked the Quickstream people to hook it to theirs; they didn't seem too enthusiastic about the idea.  They did offer to change the hardrive to another case in a couple of days if I called them and get the dada that way.
There is no proof, but there is a lot of circomstatial evidance against the only probable suspect.

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

I spoke to Arnie, a real nice guy. I will be getting the new firmware when it comes out. I will have to use a PC to upgrade, have to dirty my hands.. he he.

Hopefully the new firmware will take some of the confusion out of the use of the QS.

If any of you saw the review in DV mag, they mention a new feature that our QS does not have... Yet.

After talking to Arnie, they are fully willing to work with us to make things right. To those that have given up in frustration with your QS, hopefully in the near future things will change and you might give them another shot.

I am looking forward to never having to capture tapes again.

Re: Quickstream DV issues/questions....

Don't have the artical in front of me, might be worth looking at DV mag for the scoop. I promised not to tell. But since its in the review, I cant get in trouble for pointing it out. Mu Ha HA.
