Quickie Test Hacked GH1 and Nikon D5100

This is mostly for the next guy here looking for an across the board comparison for footage from both cameras. This is anything but exact or scientific, but gives a pretty good representation of each IMO. The tripod never left its spot. Each camera had its kit lens set to 18mm. Both cameras were otherwise set almost identical, pretty much using out of the box settings. The GH1 was hacked with the Blackout-Powell settings. The Nikon was out of the box as shipped. Right around :53 you will see exposure change on the Nikon. Otherwise there is the differences in colors and the Nikon mic is far more inferior, IMO.

Well i dont see how watching this comparison on vimeo can tell much, what are the results

Hi Flinty,

I did this for my own comparison test and to draw my own conclusion of how well they cut back and forth. My needs might not be even close to the next guy's, so its here for anyone to draw their own conclusions. For me and my needs, it satisfied me that the Nikon is going to be "close enough" if used according to knowing there are differences, but IMO, and for my use, they are rather slight. If your needs are for "dead on exact" then this clip should so you that these two "ain't it".

I had to go out and fire up the checkbook to learn this. The next guy now doesn't have to.

Cutting back and forth between people you are familiar with may be a better comparison for you to try out. We are much more critical of variation in people, than anything else.

Thanks
The two videos meld really well. What software did you use?
It seems to me that whichever camera you have, if you like it keep it.
The

Roger I just dropped both into the timelines in Premiere CS5 and whacked 15 seconds each. It was real meatball editing just to get one after the other.

Thanks James, good idea and I will try that out too. My collection is a pair of GH1s and now this one Nikon. Because the Nikon is the odd man out, for multicam I would use it for the locked wide shot and use the matched GH1s for the left and right close up B Roll stuff. For what I am doing, as long as they are this close, that set up will work, I think.

Thanks Chip, the footage from the two cameras looks very compatible. I'm considering the D5100 as a low-light situations where the GH1/2 are somewhat lacking in dynamic range. If you have the opportunity, I'd be very interested to see a nighttime comparison as well.
