C300: Quick test against the Sony FS7

Digging the colors of the FS7 here. The blue wall and blue recycling bin don't jump out at you like they do on the C300. Canon seems to like to push the blues cyan for that vibrant sky look, but the FS7 feels more real to me.

The different FOVs make it difficult for me to come down on either as a preference.

They're slightly different in colour presentation after a grade/LUT application - and that seems to also have a bearing on the way the highlights roll off on the ground to her right.

I don't see any colour differences that I wouldn't be confident to EQ out with a quick grade.

Vimeo/YouTube degradation might be levelling the playing field of course. Those bottlenecks alone make me stand back and question the sensibility of upgrades this year, much as I admire the FS7's ergonomics. Also, check out the F5/55 forum for dawning realisations of some of the early FS7 gotchas.

Ben.

Most of the gotchas should be a firmware fix. Didn't the F55 ship without any waveform at all when it first shipped? There were some gotchas there and it is a great camera. I don't see any deal breaker with the FS7 it has so much and if you are buying a new camera and like Sony colours its the one to buy. Its cheaper than a rental day a month over its two year life. That makes ownership in this bracket a no brainer.

My Fs7 paid for itself in the first 10 days of ownership.

This is a good test. Thanks for sharing it. It's really nice to see more realistically graded footage and not just log lightly graded. The C300 is really good at skin tones and it seems that the FS7 is right in there with it. Both seemed good with the highlights on the leaves, no problem there, very encouraging.

Here's a thing... daylight is great for these cameras but can anyone point out any footage that was shot like a night interior with tungsten light only? I'd love to see how FS7 does with that, roll off into shadow under tungsten, and maybe with the dreaded mixed light color. That can cause some peculiar ugliness especially on faces.

I always appreciated that F55 test Dig because it showed various setups, day interiror, day exterior, night interior, night exterior (incandescent and sodium vapor). These are tests that would really help me figure out if the F7 is right for narratives.
