Quick Question - What Size is Standard Def?

If I shot something in HD (1280 x 720) and I want to export it to standard def (but keep the same aspect ratio) what size should I use?

Thanks,

Chris

In NTSC it's 720x480. If you scale the DVCPRO HD frame (960x720) directly to 720x480 you'' get an 16x9 anamorphic SD frame.

Chris, I added some info to my old post.
If I do that, then I am depending on the person I give this to to be smart enough to expand the image so it looks correct. I want to create an mov that plays in the correct ratio naturally, that is why I am thinking I need to use 720 x 405.

If you want to deliver a quicktime movie for mastering to a SD format, and want it to show "idiot proof" on 4:3 you would letterbox the 16x9 frame.

Also be aware that NTSC DV and DVCPRO is 720x480, but uncompressed cards like Decklink and AJA uses 720x486.

And how does one do that in FCP?l

You should just drag the HD sequence into a 4:3 NTSC sequence and FCP should letterbox accordingly, but unfortunately it does not work!
