Quick Question: Single frame on DVX?

Hi I was wondering if you could shoot single frames with the DVX. I remember (long ago) when I used to work with the Sony Handycam VX-1000 and it had single frame. I made some fun animations with it...and I hope the DVX has it too. Does anyone know? Thanks

DVRack now called Adobe OnLocation allows for single frame and timelapse recording straight to laptop. It also includes Onion Skin feature so if you are doing a complex claymation you can overlay previous frame to see if you missed moving something.

Its mostly used to bypass tape and record straight to laptop using waveform etc. to monitor exact exposure levels. You'll save wear and tear on the heads of your camera.

The DVX100 and DVX100A can do this. The DVX100B can't.

Barry the DVX100, original Australian PAL version aka DVX100e does not support single frame recording. So did Panasonic just decide to screw the poor old PAL people from down under or is this a mistake????

It's not "one frame", it's a burst of frames for like 1/2 second, but that's due to the limitations of it recording on a tape drive. The DVX100E should most certainly have that. I'm on the road so I can't check exactly what the feature was called, I think it was called "one shot" recording.

Recording set-up > interval recording > one-shot

You cannot be in 24 mode or it won't be an option.

I tried it for stop motion, and it turned out horribly. I ended up hooking up my camera to my computer and capturing single frames with sony Vegas (but I think any editor can do this)

That's correct, the shortest interval you can record is 1/2 second with a variety of time intervals..

Oh that, ok. Yeah I knew aboot that but never noticed it could be used for single frame...

emoo,
You can do one frame-at-time animation with the DVX100B with a little work and a lot of patience.

1. Set up your shot and shoot a short burst of tape. Then, change your scene for the next shot and shoot another short burst. Continue with the rest of the sequence. Once you have shot your sequence, capture onto your computer as usual.

2. Once your footage is on your computer, in your NLE (I use Premiere) bring your first clip down and remove everything but the first frame. Bring down the next clip and remove everything but the first frame, continuing with each clip until the entire sequence is assembled.

I am currently helping my nine-year-old son do an animated short in this way. It takes a while but it works!
