Quick Question. Brain fried.....late night.

Need to adapt line level back down to mic level for cell phone interface. What's the atten level from line?

standard line level is +4dBu, unsure of the phone but most consumer, instrument and mic levels are -10dBV
depending on your signal chain impedence may need to be considered also

Yeah, figured. Mic into outboard gear, into cell phone

Gotta stop these late nights. Trying to adapt a cell headset for this voice modulator and back into a cell phone.

Huh?! Are you trying to make a ransom demand? Who've you got locked in the basement? :)

What exactly is your equipment and goal? And how does the phone come into it?

LOL, no, just tired. I think I got it.

I used to be a radio/voice character.....someone asked me to revive the character and do call in's to their show...... so trying to adapt things so I can do it with my cell.

A bit unwieldy workaround but if you're stuck, your computer or even your laptop should have a line in and phones out. And you can use the built in windows mixer to trim the levels and negates any potential impedence issues. Your phone may even have some wireless or bluetooth options here too. Apple products probably do this automatically but I wouldn't know, never owned one never will.

Idea #2, if you're prepared to shell out you should be able to get a small 4- or 5-channel mixing board for far less than $50 (usually 1 or 2 XLR in, 2 mono and a stereo RCA in, stereo monitor out, phones out and line out). They are really useful, especially if you record music. I bought one for my drums to allow me to balance the snare and bass vs the rest of the kit without getting up. Find endless uses for it in my signal chain.

Alternatively with the quality of smart phone audio these days you'll probably find that putting it in front of a speaker out of the voice modulator works sufficiently. Could well be trying to find a complicated fix for a simple solution.

Professional, balanced line level is +4dBu.
Consumer, unbalanced line level is -10dBu.
Mic level is generally around -50dBu, +/- depending on the mic.

"Instrument" level lies between mic level and consumer line level.

So line-to-mic attenuation can be as high as -50dB.

I would try a -20db pad as that should be enough to go from domestic down to mic level, if you are going pro levels a -50db pad will be better.

Personally I have a kit with -10, -15 and -20db XLR adaptors and plug them together to get various degrees of attenuation, a cell phone should have an output level control too so that should also help get the best levels thru a -20db pad.
