Quick Letus Rack Focus Example

Lucky Duck
This is why I love using a 35mm adapter. I've been shooting my son's Little League games exclusively with the Letus.

In this example the focus goes from the pitcher to the batter, something I just couldn't achieve effectively using the A1 lens.

This is just a 5 second clip

EDIT: Here's another clip (no rack focus here) that demonstrates the advantage in isolating the player from the background. It really allows the viewer to filter out all the background distraction and just pay attention to the player:

Nice shots...are you using your vividrgb settings? Also I found that I have more groundglass to work with my letus when I mount it upside down. maybe it is the way the ccd's will be seen on the GG when using the A1. This is most noticable when using a wide angle lens. IE 24mm or less. Let me know if you see a difference.

Do you recommend those settings without adapter use or is that what you switch to only when you put the adapter on?

BTW on your clips where were you standing? I assume that is your son's baseball game. Were you in the stands or do they let you get close to the plate?

Looks nice.

These are the settings I use when I put the adapter on only.

Looks nice.

Using a 100mm Nikon and shooting through a metal fence.

he has a 7" marshal monitor for excellent focus.

disjecta, on your adapter the image is usually upside down? thats why you have to use a flip thing or whats all that about?

For these shots I am eyeballing it using the peaking on the LCD. No monitor.

The image is already flipped right side up when it is captured. All of this happens inside the Letus.

Yes but with the color gain set to 0 and the sharpness set to 0 and HDV set to mid
I've noticed that with the Letus attached your clips are gloriously absent of CA. Your footage has a very natural, clean and sharp appearance. I wonder if its the camera settings or the Letus that is affecting the lack of CA?

Yesterday, I went to the Gyeongbuk Palace in Seoul, Korea and captured several hours of footage. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but the CA in the contrasty areas is extremely frustrating and difficult to ignore. I used the vividrgb settings (which looks great BTW). I love the flexibility and resolution of this camera, but the CA make it feel at times that I am wearing 3D glasses.

Ranger, I'm no expert on CA but I have a theory about it.

CA usually is more pronounced at the wide end of the lens. How big or how small the iris is also has some influence over it.

What I have learned over time is that there is a sweet spot on most lenses and that is the point where the least amount of CA occurs. In some cases, it's not detectable at all.

When I am using the Letus, I am zoomed in to about 79 which is far away from the wide end and also my exposure setting is around the f5.6 mark although it varies here. By coincidence, I think the Letus operates best around the sweet spot of the Canon lens and the CA is minimized or eradicated completely.

Now all you tech heads can contradict me if you like but this is my theory. :)

Of course I'm thrilled to be CA-free because that was one thing that really turned me off 35mm adapters at the beginning of my research.

How much does the Letus Flip Enhanced weigh? I'm in the process of ordering one, but don't have a rod support system yet. Now I really don't want to mess up the threads, but also want to shoot some videos with it in the meanwhile. Otherwise I'll have to build myself a rod support system in one way or the other, which is kinda hard since I have no tools to create one :)

I'm not sure how much it weighs but I use mine without rods support with no problem at all.

Obviously, if you start going with big heavy lenses, you will need to reconsider but for the standard 28mm, 50mm, 85mm, etc. lenses, you'll be fine.

disjecta, do you adjust vividrgb so often based on your shoots? i noticed you change a few(3) options around every clip posting.

I am always adjusting stuff and sometimes I just want a different feel based on the atmosphere of a scene so I will compensate but for the most part, I'm shooting the Letus stuff using the above variation of VIVIDRGB and anything else I will adjust the color gain based on what the scene's color palette is. For instance, if there is a lot of red in a scene, I will dial down the color gain to about 0.

These look gorgeous disjecta...kinda made me think of The Wonder Years. And I love the detail on these Canons.

The issue at 6 secs on the 2nd clip, was that a hdv artifact?
