Quick C100 Test

Took me a day to upload to Vimeo, but I finally got some test shots up. These were just some handheld shots I did very quickly in the backyard today as I try to get familiar with the camera.

What do you think of it so far?

I am falling in love with it. Form factor so small, almost the size of a dslr, but with all the features we expect in a video camera. The image quality is definitely a step up from dslr to me, it is really nice. Batteries and storage that last ALL day. The low light performance is ridiculous. I am filming stuff at midnight and bringing up the iso makes it look like mid-day (with just some grain which actually looks quite nice, reminds me of film grain).

I mean no camera is perfect, but this one seems like a great compromise for half the cost of the c300. They didn't just reduce functionality, they did it smartly. No battery compartment cover, manual nd filter wheel, simplified design. They didn't just build a crippled c300, they built a really good camera for the price with the same image quality as the c300. That's amazing.

I really am falling in love with it.

Thanks for sharing. I have also heard the C100 is great in low light even at iso 20,000. I would love to see how it compares to the 5D.

I returned a 5d mark iii just before getting the C100, and I would say the low light is comparable. To me I liked the mark iii, but it just wasn't enough "video camera" for me. You know what i mean? It is still primarily a stills camera and doesn't have all the great functions a good video camera should have. Magic Lantern kinda helps, but that is really buggy rigt now. I think the IQ is better on the C100. Still the mark iii is no slouch. The build quality of the c100 is just amazing. Definitely the most professional highest quality camera I've ever owned.

if I were debating between the mark iii or the canon c100, I would say save up the extra money and get the canon c100. You won't be sorry, trust me.

I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the AVCHD and ProRes. I guess the difference would show in the grading?

Yes, and heavy grading at that (substantially altering the colors, say, making the trees have brown leaves instead of green), along with pulling a key, though as you can see, the tools are advanced to the point where AVCHD does an adequate job at that...ProRes just has an edge in finesse.

The high ISO stuff was handled differently at the end, with the prores looking more like grain and less muddy. But I don't know that I care because frankly I can't see needing to go to ISO 20,000 on a light sensitive camera like this. I don't think an external recorder is needed for excellent footage at all...

The AVCHD does a very good job. I guess where the Ninja will come in handy is that I want to make documentaries next year, and would hope to get them broadcast, so I don't think AVCHD 24mbs will cut it, hopefully the C100 + 240mbs ProRes will hit good enough quality since the C300 is already broadcast approved. I don't think the Ninja will make much difference to the quality of web video, but is a better workflow as the footage is already in ProRes on a SSD or HDD ready to go straight into FCPX with no transcoding and pulldown.

Looks good Gary. Thanks for the split screen. I couldn't see a difference in the image but we have seen this with the AF-100 as well. ISO is very impressive on the C100.

Did some threads get merged or something? I'm not sure what video you guys are talking about. I would like to see it. Mine doesn't have any high ISO stuff.

Nevermind! Fricking weird. That video he posted doesn't show up on an ipad. Not even a box or something to let you know something should be there, lol. I got it now. Great video btw. Love that low iso stuff. Interesting that I couldn't see a difference at all between the internal codec and prores.

Does it look the same when you view the master copies as well?

Seeing all of the new S35 videocameras I feel the days of the 5D to shoot video will come to an end. There are just to many pros compared to a DSLR. But with that said I still like to shoot with my 5D3 when I'm around my family because it's so portable and easy to use.

Loved this video. I agree wholeheartedly with the review. If you are debating between the Mark III or the C100, there is really no debate. If you are really pushing it to afford the Mark III then you should look at all the options at that price range I think (Mark II, Mark III, 7D, GH2, GH3, etc). I didn't feel there was a gigantic difference between the Mark III and my Canon 7D.
