Questions regarding HVX and Aerial shooting

I am preparing to shoot from a BellJet Ranger with my HVX....Camera will be on a side-mount with gyropak stabilizers. Pilot is insanely good. So my question is this: What format will provide the cleanest imagery? We have had issues in the past with the varicam when shooting 24p (strobbing due to constant lateral movement), and I would like to shoot 720/24pn (considering more time on the p2 cards...then I don't have to change them when hanging out of a bird), but I was wondering in shooting the aerials in 60i would be better (either 720 or 1080)....

Anyone got a suggestion?

Also, I am considering a Firestore or Citidisk for streaming out of firewire port to avoid the P2 change....any recommendations on that one???

thanks,

When shooting 24p on any camera (including film) there is always the chance of strobing depending on how the camera is moved and also the shutter speed. Having the stabilizer will make a big difference but any fast pans or tilts can still result in strobing.

There is no 60i in 720. 60i only exists in 480 or 1080 mode. I just shot over 40 mins worth of footage while hanging out the side of a small Hues 300c with the door taken off. I used 720/24pN and most of the footage turned out pretty good considering it was all hand held. The times it gets hard is when you zoom in. Trying to do steady hand held on a long lens is difficult at the best of times and almost impossible with the vibration of a helicopter.

Having the camera on a mount would help with this but I don't know if I'd want to rely on that flimsy FW connection.

Well, regarding 1080/720....my main question here is should I shoot 60i, 60p, 30p or 24p. I would like to roll at 720p/24pN to maximize P2 as well as match the rest of the production, but am concerned of strobing. we have had mixed results at 24 framerate on Varicams, but of course 60i always looks clean. Just hate to have a 60i aerial in a program that is delivered 24p. I know we can software convert 60i to 24p, but would prefer it in camera.

Hi.. I have been shooting this doco in 1080i Pal which is 50i I guess..

Anything with the "i" would indicate interlaceing...

Just been to scared of the stobbing with the progressive frame rates... Although I did a shoot the other day and tested the 720PN at 50fps with some boxing footage and was way impressed when I imported to FCP... very smooth slo-mo..

Cheers
