questions from the operating manual

I am sure there will be other questions but i read the manual and have 2 :

1 - on page 35 it says that when recording variable frame rates in native mode no sound is recorded. I thought sound was recorded

2 - it is not clear from the manual how to use 4 channels of sound - if you have 2 mics plugged in to the xlr ports and you use the left and right internal mic then you have 4 signals but there are only 2 gain dials for sound. how do you control 4?

thanks

if sound was recorded at native mode...
then at 60fps it will sound like "ttttttthhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiisssssssss"
4fps it will sound like "ts"
24fps will sound like "this"

I thought you'd be able to exchance scene files between cameras?

Couldn't find that in the manual.

Also if you can is it only two HVX or can you exchange between a varicam and an HVX?

asking me?

i am already feeling like micro-barry after reading 42 pages from the manual... :)

wait let me search the answer..... but i think the answer wud be NO.. only betwn HVXs

about the sound recording i thought it would record it in real time to be available - obviosly if you played it at the different rate it would sound different but sometimes that can be a cool cliche dramatic effect - "nooooooooooooo" as something is happening

maybe u need to record in "P" and not "NP" mode for the audio to be insync. "NP" more will record only active frames...

On page 56 it talks about saving and loading scene files to SD memory so you should be able to exchange those between HVXs. Is that what you mean?

I'm curious as to what it means by saving 'other' settings.

I've had the production model for all of about two minutes, so I can't give a definitive answer, but I believe you're looking at an iffy translation. The audio is recorded, but won't play back unless you're playing back at the same frame rate you shot at (and that means 24, 30, or 60). But I do believe it's there; it was there on the preproduction model.

Can't dig into that until I get an editor that gives me 4 channel support. I believe that the internal mic channels are always AGC, but I'm not 100% on that and can't experiment until next week.

Barry,

According to the brochure it does NOT record audio in Native mode UNLESS your the playback rate matches the capture rate. Forgive me, but i just wrote a post at DVinfo about this so I'm just going to paste it here.

"IF in Native mode then it seems that audio will not be recorded IF your playback speed is different than you capture speed. SO, if you are shooting in 24pN and have it set to do any other framerate OTHER than 24 than audio will not be recorded. So NO audio when doing variable frame rates in Native mode.

BUT, in standard mode it says in the broucher is DOES record audio in variable frame rates. This is because whatever frame rate you shoot in it will be imbedded in a standard stream and audio can be recorded in that standard stream. So, if you need audio during your slow or fast motion you need should NOT use Native mode."

Barry, so the production model recorded sound during variable frame rates in Native mode in frame rates other than those matching up to the timebase?

You can, by saving them on the SD card and moving the SD card to the other camera.

I'm 99% certain it's HVX-to-HVX only.

Score one for RedIndian! Yes, this does appear to be the case. If you're shooting offspeed in 24pN, it apparently does *not* record any audio. If you're recording in 720/24p mode, even at variable frame rates, it does record the audio.

Sorry I blew it earlier.

Not sure. I thought it did, but I may have gotten that mixed up with the "over 60" mode. In any case, it does appear that the manual is correct.

Ok time for my question..

TC jaming..

After reading the manual, it appears that you can grab the timecode from a firewire stream (we knew this bit), however it sounds like you just use that as the preset.. - just like manually setting the preset TimeCode.
Can you actually use it to jam sync running timecode? - Just setting the preset before recording doesn't help when it's time to roll both cameras.

I thought I understood the variable framerate stuff completely until the article came out, and now I'm actually more confused. :-P "720/24p mode" is really 24p, "over 60" in 720 resolution, right? And if that's the case, then it's always recording 60fps, but just laying down duplicates of frames to achieve those 60 frames per second. And if that's the case, then how does, say, 48fps in 720/24p mode look different than 48fps in 24pN mode if you've run the frame converter on the 720/24p stuff? And if there is no difference, then why would it record audio on one and not the other? So much confusion...

It wouldn't look any different. But I assume in 720/24p it uses the sixty frames that are initially recorded as a sort of a solid clock cycle to hang the audio off or against.
In 720/24pN you are throwing away those extra frames and the audio has no costant to work against, if it did record audio at say 12fps in this mode you would probably just get gaps in audio when played back at 24fps.

just a theory...

Makes a bit of sense.

I'm beginning to think the "over 60" mode is evil. I doubt I'll ever use it. I know it's a reminent of the Varicam and they probably had to include it for compatibility sake with firewire out and DVCPROHD, but it's really more of a hassle than it's worth. Unless I ever find a reason to shoot 60p, it's just another menu item that's in the way. 24pN means more recording time on the card, variable framerates on the fly, and the ability to view the effect of those variable framerates on the camera. That's all I need.

Clip metadata auto update

Clip metadata auto update

I have a question about the clip metadata...

It’s pretty clear from the manual that you can upload “Scenario” metada from an SD card and that this information basically amounts to the info you’d find on a slate. Can the camera automatically update any of this info as new clips are recorded? Specifically, when you start recording a new clip, can it automatically update the Take No.? Seems to me that that would be a useful feature... Though, I read nothing about it in the manual, so I’m pretty sure it can’t. Still, I was just wondering if any one knew for sure.

Thanks,

Trane
