Questions about importing...

Hello everyone:

I'm a new member and haven't got the time to see all the posts here yet, so I hope I'm not posting something alredy discussed :S. It's just that I'm kind of in a deadline to buy a video camera, and after researching I found that the A1 is perfect for what I want to do.

Now here's the problem: I live in Portugal, and I've searched and searched, but the camera isn't sold here. So import is my only option. I wonder If someone could tell me the best contry to order it from ( considering taxes and such) or at least some realible websites to order it from. I've seen huge price differences, and don't want to overpay an alredy expensive camera...

Thanks in advance.

Probably one of the most trusted and respected distributers in the USA is B & H Photo/Video: www.bhphotovideo.com They don't have the lowest price but a resonable price. They sell both the NTSC and PAL versions of the A1. You will find other places that have lower prices but be careful. Many of them are scams. Always do a search on the internet to look for reviews of stores before buying.

It's more expensive than some other sites, but being reliable makes a huge difference to me, so I guess I'll import from it. With transport and all, the price goes to 4,104.95 $, wich is around 2500 €, wich is what I was expecting to spend. However, there is also the possibility of importing from the amazon in U.K. The reason is that, due to the europe economic treaty, the camera will not suffer taxes... but it's 3300 €. My great question, and I wonder if anyone knows this, is if when importing a product from the U.S in to Europe, it is aplied only VAT (importacion tax - 17%) or national taxes also apply (in my case, IVA - 21% to add to the 17 :/)...

By the way thanks for the site, It's seems to have lots of equipment that I'll have to order sooner or later, and it's good to know it delivers!

In the UK, both types of tax apply; you'd have to ask someone who knows the Portuguese tax rules for a definite answer, but I expect it's the same, because the European Union doesn't like the idea of big tax differences between countries

Thanks for the imput Nick :).

I got good news. My cousin, wich lives in Canada, will be coming here next month. I'm thinking about asking him to bring an A1 with pal/ntsc. I've heard it's 500 $, wich would actually be more cheap than the pal version! :p does anybody knows how much time it takes to make the upgrade or where it can be done (in canada)?
