Questions about audio (h4n etc)

So I am purchasing my 7D this weekend and since I will be using it 90% of the time for film I am going to need audio capabilities I have looked into the H4N like everyone recommends and it seems Amazing!

My main question is how the setup works specifically.

Does the H4N mount onto my hot shoe and records the audio with in its self and then I can also plug in say an XLR shotgun mic and have a boom operator hold the shotgun out there and it will mix the two?

Thus having to put the audio from the H4N into FCP and matching it up with the lips and ambiances etc?
 
I use an h4n and a d90 (if i upgrade to a 7d will be same setup), i always use an old fashioned slate.

Creates a spike onthe H4n audio file and one on the camera audio. Just line them up in your editing software of choice and your all set.

Its pretty easy.
