i am going to shoot a movie with dvx100b, if i shoot in 4:3 can the image later be stretched to fit 16:9 or a theater screen? or must it be captured in 16:9 to begin with? thanks

From what I have heard in the forums, if you shoot in sqeeze mode, you can then stretch it to fit a native 16:9 format in post. But I havent tried it personally

Merc,

If you shoot 4:3, you can later add letterbox to make the footage appear 16:9.

SQUEEZE mode is the built-in 16:9 mode. It's just like 16:9 footage from any other camera in terms of capturing and editing. However, since the DVX doesn't have native 16:9 chips, it's extracted and blown-up from the 4:3 chips. So, it's not as detailed and crisp as 16:9 from a Canon XL2, but it does look very nice.

I'd recommend you shoot some test footage in SQUEEZE mode and see if it suits your purposes.

thank both of you very much, youve been such a help. please clarify this for me and i will completely understand.

Is the best thing to do to shoot in 4:3 and just edit it to 16:9 later if i must? I dont mind it being in 4:3, but i just want to know that the option of future 16:9 veiwing is there. And editing to 16:9 later is no different than shooting in stretch or letter box on the dvx100b because it has no native 16:9 chip? Is this correct?

One more question: should i shoot in 24p or 24p advanced if the final product is to be a dvd?

Thank you,

merc

Shoot 4:3, but frame it for 16:9. Thsi means that use a screen overlay or some rubber bands to mask of the top and bottom of your screen.

Then edit in a 16:9 project in your NLE and crop off the top and bottom to use only the center 16:9 area of the image.

This method actually allows you to move the image up.and down in teh edit bay and actually choose exactly where you crop the 16:9 from your image.

This is exactly what the caemra does in squeeze mode, but A) you don't have the ability to re-frame vertically in edit, and B) your NLE will probabaly do a better job of the 16:9 crop than the camera will.

Yep, Mikko nailed it. The quality difference is so negligible that it's better to have the flexibility to reframe. I end up reframing nearly every shot I shoot in 4:3. Squeeze mode you have to nail on the first shot, so I have only used it when I wouldn't be involved in the editing and had to hand over the tapes when the shoot was done.

I would shoot SQUEEZE if I was going for a smaller than 16:9 ratio, like if I wanted 2:1 or 2.35:1, I would shoot SQUEEZE, since I could still reframe a bit.
