Question.

Hey everyone.

I just wanted to say I love the XL2. I just started using it a few months back on a short film, which is still filming. But during breaks I would like to shot a music video, and here is my question.

In some music videos you see the band playing in slow motion, but the instruments are played at the regular rate. I forgot if you record in a fast frame rate, and then play twice as fast. Or something else? Also if so how I would set it up? I'm pretty much a noob. Sorry. I just don't want to slow it down in post, because I know it'll look bad.

Thanks ahead of time.

You won't get away without slowing it down in post. Shooting at a faster frame rate won't change anything. How they do it on real music video sets is they have the music playing faster than normal and they lip sync to that, then they slow the video down in post to match the normal tempo of the song.

I hope that answers it for you and that your filming goes well, because I know I love seeing good footage out of the XL2.

Alright, thanks. I always thought they captured at a faster frame rate, but played the band plays at twice fast.

Yeah, hopefully it'll look good. I'll post it when it's done. It's just a matter of the band recording it, and then myself finding decent locations. I got a good concept in my head.

Well for digital, at least as far as the XL2 is concerned, changing the frame rate isn't the same as changing it on a film camera. Either way, if you shoot at faster frame rate (giving you slow motion) while the band is playing and singing at a the regular speed, when you slow it down, the syncing will be off.

Yeah, I know it'll be off if I shoot at a faster frame rate, and the band plays at the regular speed, that's obvious. But if I film a section in a faster frame rate, and the band plays twice as fast then I'll get the desired effect I'm looking for. Right?

Well what I meant to say in my previous reply was that changing the frame rate on the XL2 won't really do what I think you think it does. Changing the frame rate really applies to film cameras. Honestly, for what you're after, you can't do without slowing it down in post. And to clarify what it is you are after, you want the image to be in slow-mo but the singing to match up right?

I know that you can change the frame rate on a film camera however unless I'm missing a hidden feature in the XL2, please tell me how is it possible to change the frame rate on an XL2 (or even a DVX for that matter) when it is fixed at either 50i or 25P (PAL). Don't you need a varicam for that??

turney switch thing????

I'm in Australia using the XL2 PAL camera which only has 25P or 50I. I was under the impression that to speed up/slow down footage on any video camera you had to alter the number of frames the camera captures per second (irrespective of the shutter speed).

On the XL2 or DVX there does not seem to be such a control.

Barry, anyone??

If you're going to apply slomo in post you would normally get best results shooting 50i. Of course if you actually want a juddery effect in the slomo you would use 25p. Depends on the effect you are looking for.

hey sorry about the "turney switch thingy", i was kinda out of it and had alot of homework. Basically i ment the switch to change the frame rate, it says "24p, 30p, and 60i"...sorry for this mean understanding!
