Question?

You'll have to reformat the drive. You cannot delete a single partition (or P2 card data) in the camera and I don't know of a way to do it in the MAC OS. I think there are probably third party partition management programs that might let you do it but I'm not sure if that would interfere with the cameras ability to offload future cards. I usually reformat the drive after I'm sure the offloaded data is secure and backed up elsewhere in my workflow. The offload process is really just a convenience in the field for dumping data until you get back to the studio and ingest your footage. I rarely keep more than 4 or 5 cards worth of data on that drive.

absolutely...that's what you should do. Use Panasonic's free P2CMS program and ingest the volume from your field drive that you offloaded to. Then export that exact P2 duplicate volume to wherever you store your archived data (best to store it in two places). Use the DO COMPARE in P2CMS to ensure your P2 data is intact.

EDIT: optionally, you could just drag and drop that volume to your backup location, but by using P2CMS and doing the compare you have a better guarantee that everything is correct.

Grant, does that have to be plugged into the wall? Are you sure it will work perfect for dumping footage off my 16 gb P2 card (every 20 film minutes) to that hard drive on location?
My setup works like a champ, I really like it. They just released a battery option for the drive-adapter which is listed on the link I gave you. So, it should be self contained, no AC required They didn't mention a charger....I wonder if it is included? I am going to find out and order one next week, so I'll post up when I find out the deal. When you purchase one of these they throw in about $40 worth of cables too.

YES IT IS! a huge one!

why not go get you an old mac laptop (g4 powerbook) with pcmcia slot from ebay/craigslist/pawnshop?

It may be a headache, but not necessarily a migraine. I shoot all the time on my 16GB card and offload in the field. When I get back I copy my 2 or 3 filled P2 cards to my MAC, reformat the field drive and I'm good to go for next time.

No doubt, a field laptop is better...but this way does work!
