Question?

This is what I use. It is very solid mil-spec hardware though a bit more expensive than a standard drive. If you look around, I believe you can find the adapter and the HDD bundled at a better price.

Maxell just expanded the system with a new gizmo, the VC102. It uses the same drive for direct recording and transcodes the file while recording. It is just hitting the market.

The external drive you use will have to be plugged into an external power source. The camera cannot power the external drive.

The hard drive has to be formatted by the HVX and to do this you must set 1394 HOST mode in the menu.

every time you offload your P2 card using this 1394 HOST method, it will create a new partition based on the size of your card. i.e. dumping a 16GB card five times will result in (5) separate 16GB partitions. When plugged into your MAC, those partitions should show up on the desktop. Mine do. If yours don't then use disk utility to locate and mount them. When you get them mounted and open them, you'll see the full P2 file structure beginning with the CONTENTS folder and lastclip.txt.

if you're using FCP just L&T pointing to the contents folder. All your clips will come up. These are structured as mxf files, so you won't click on a directory and see any thumbnails. You could use various mxf viewers but assuming you just want to get the footage into FCP, L&T will do it.

One other worthy note on this. You can only have a maximum of 15 partitions that the camera will create on your external drive. Therefore, with a 16GB card, 16x15=240GB so an external HD larger than that would be useless. If using 32GB cards anything over 480GB will not be used, so don't think you can buy a 3 TB drive and make use of it. Most of it would be wasted.

Also, fill your cards as much as possible, because even if you shoot 5 minutes of DV and dump the card, you will use up the full 16GB and a partition on the external drive.

Good luck.
