Question regarding aspect ratio

Ok, I am shooting a kid's history show pilot this weekend. We'll be shooting HD 720/PN. Now, the native aspect ratio of this is 16:9. Since this is a kid's show, people may want to have it in a 4:3 aspect, how would I make sure while shooting that this will be a possiblity? Thanks for the help, and if you need to ask any follow-up questions, please do so. :dankk2:

That's the thing. It may go direct-to-DVD or broadcast, we aren't 100% sure yet, since it is a pilot. Regardless, I need to know how I can get a 4:3 aspect ratio from 16:9, and what I can do in production to make that transition (if need be) smoother.

Well, I'm assuming you want 4:3 full screen, not letter boxed, so I would just protect when shooting for 4:3. In post, I would edit the whole thing and then crop it to 4:3 (cutting off the sides) for output.

That makes sense. Now, would you or anyone else happen to know the guides or measurement for the tape that I put over the monitor or the LCD?

Start out in letterbox, tape your monitor and lcd over the black bars, then switch back to full frame.

The HVX can display 4:3 guides on the LCD and EVF (DISPLAY SETUP -> SAFETY ZONE -> 4:3).

Hey that's pretty nifty! I was just using the DVX trick. I don't have you guys' fancy HVX setup. Not that I'm jealous or anything!
