Question: Red overseas-interest

Hi

I've been following the Red development for several months now, constantly searching the net for every possible hint of information about this camera, including the topics here.. (very informative by the way). And you guys seem to have alot of inside info, but I'm not even sure if anybody is allowed to answer my question for privacy policies but i'll give it a try...

I'm from Norway, and I'm sorta wondering if there has been any serious interest and maybe some reservations from the Norwegian film industry...

I hope to get my hands on a Red One in a not so distant future... but my wallet said "NO" to a reservation.... Building up to another question of mine... If the 1st camera ships to the lucky bastard at the top of the reservation list in April(ish)... how long until someone like me with an angry wallet can shoot 4k raw?

I am so excited about this camera, not just because it's a cool camera, but it is desperatly needed here in Norway... We don't have the budgets like Hollywood, so 35 mm is often not even optional. A lot of the times even our "big budget" films are shot 16mm for economical reasons... And with all that money spent on film, there's really nothing left for real post-prod digital processing.. Finally, with red, all this can be put to rest and we can finally make the movies we are able to imagine. MY GOD WE NEED THIS!!!!

Hey Kjetil,

Skoal!

Ive been talking with a guy where you live (Oslo) that is very interested in getting a RED One camera system, or he may have already have reserved one. His name is Eirik Tyrihel, and you can find him via his web site at: www.groovyentertainment.com. Tell Eirik how you found him, and say hi to him for me. If he gets a RED camera he'd be a real good person for you to network with.

As I told Eirik, I have visited Norway before (1987) and look forward to going there again. A beautiful country! I have extensive Norwegian blood in my family line. My Great Grandmother emigrated from Norway to the USA in 1875. Her family name was Anderson. If I somehow get to Norway next year with my RED camera, you and Eirik are welcome to check it out and shoot some footage with me...

I'll definetly take you up on that! Norway is beautiful I agree, but we need Red in order to capture it!

Right now I'm putting my fantasy of "holding a red one in my hands" infront of my fantasy of "having sex with Jessica Alba"! Hoping at least one of them will come true.. For the record... I can't afford any of them...

Thanks alot for that piece of info. I'll tell Eirik you said hi.

Hi Kjetil, I got your mail, but when I try to reply to you I get a failure notice saying "User over quota"...

Don´t know any other Norwegians who have reserved RED yet, I would guess I am not alone, but it´s just a guess...

(I also havent gotten mine confirmed yet due to the ongoing IBC thing)

Hey Patrik,

Very cool! If I get to Scandinavia before you get #173, I'll let all of you in Norway and Sweden know I'm coming, so you can check out my camera and shoot some footage. On the same trip in 1987 when I spent time in Norway, I also went to Sweden afterwards. Nice country and very friendly people! The Norwegian blood in my family that I mentioned is on my father's side. On my mother's side we have some ancestors from Sweden.

Welcome to the DVX User RED forum...

Glad to see some real Scandinavian enthusiasm! Imagine soon we'll all be editing 4k footage on our laptops! Read the thread about the workflow. Looks promising! We have to hold on to our viking helmets!

Forget Norway. Bollywood is where the overseas market will be for RED. I am surprised that no one from India has showed much interest in this forum. I see mainly posts from people in the states and Canada. I would think that RED would quickly take over the market in a country where low budget movies are mass produced. Film is a large part of their budget and post production times are short. Seems like Bollywood would be a perfect market for RED. Some people in India go to the movies every day just to sit in an airconditioned room and escape the heat. Plus few can afford a HD plasma screen and blu-ray player. The only thing that would be a road block for RED would be the fact that little mom and pop movie theaters in India can't afford to upgrade to 4K projecters. I don't know if cineplexes have taken over there yet.

This is dead nuts on. We have spent a lot of time in India... and you're right. That market is completely, 100% film dominated. When the RED camera comes online, the Indian (and Pakistani) markets will buy a crapload of them. They do not want digital video. They don't care about HDCAM, Varicam, Viper, or Genesis. They want digital film.

When that happens... oh man... the first few people with a RED in Mumbai will make a *pile* of money.

The size of the Bollywood market is staggering.

I think so too.

I´m living in Oslo too, followed this cam for months, and all I can say - I WANT THIS TOY!
n. I am lobbying rental house in town to buy one, they are aware of this cam, all guys from rental house are in Amsterdam now checking RED out. So I suspect that there will be RED cam in Oslo for hire, just maybe the que will be couple of months long...

Cool. What rental house is this?

videoutstyr.no

I talked with them today, they are not doing it. red is too big for them...

sad.

lets hope it will be another place to rent RED in Oslo..

RED is coming to Serbia as well! At least one reservation is made so far but some prominent movie makers (Kusturica among them as rumors made it) are also interested. RED is good news here given the fact that we have a lot of young aspiring movie directors and very little available money for everything. I hope to see RED in my hands some time next year! Good luck to us all and thanks to Janard and his crew.

Thought videotstyr.no only did sales, not rentals. Don't know if you've talked with Norskfilmstudio.no. They rent the big stuff to the motion picture industry. The have the Sony F900 as their most advanced HD system. And they also have the top lenses in the world like Cooke. I think if any company would appreciate Red... it's them..

If not.. This guy Eirik whom we've mentioned earlier in this discussion has reserved one for his company, and I'm sure he's interested in making a buck renting it out now and then. I think either way, it will find it's way here. Best we can do is tell the right people about Red. They we'll probably be sceptical, but once Red is closer to a finshed product, I'm sure they'll be fighting over it. And then we can say "I told you so..."

Yes.I am waiting to place my order for 3.I dont know why im still waiting. My (Bollywood ) should go to production next summer!

Videoutstyr does rent, just call them.

Yes I know about Norskfilmstudio.no and Sony F900 is expensive to rent [it almost cheaper to shoot film..]. Although they have some nice low rent prices for lenses.
