Hi, new here. I was looking into buying an XH A1 and was wondering if buying a refurbished one is a good option. B&H has stopped selling the original A1 but does have a refurbished one for sale. I know B&H is highly rated so could I buy this and be fairly certain that it would be in great condition? This is what they sent me regarding the condition:

The item #633996 (Canon - XH-A1 3CCD HDV Camcorder) is a Factory Refurbished product, and restored to the exact manufacturer specifications by the original manufacturer. It also comes with a 90-day warranty. These unused or used items have been returned to original manufacturers for various reasons; for example, use in field tests, use in sales displays, and cancellations.

Also is the XH A1s that much of an upgrade from the original? Is it worth the extra thousand dollors?

Thanks for the help.

If you're buying new, there's no reason to get an A1 over the A1s. The upgrades are small but can save you money down the line. If you're buying used, there's no reason to get a refurbished camera over a used one. I don't know what B&H is selling the refurbished one for, but I doubt it's going to be better than used market price considering you can get fairly low hours A1 for around $2300.

Thanks for the reply. Would you trust a used camera over one that has been refurbished by the original manufacturer? I don't fully understand what risks there are with buying refurbished "electronics" vs "used". Is it better or worse than buying used? B&H are selling it for around $2,600 I think (with 90 day warrenty).

Thanks

A refurbished camera has around the same chance of going south as a well taken care of used camera. It's virtually guaranteed that it will not break down within the 90 days warranty and after that you're in the same boat as if you've bought a used camera. The only advantage is that you're buying it from a store, with no chance of getting scam or getting a lemon, and that's why you're paying extra. Most economical way is to find a trustworther seller who's selling a used cam with the original 1 year Canon warranty still valid.

Once again thank you for the responses. One more question. Would it be possible to buy the refurbished camera and buy an extended warranty from B&H or elsewhere? I've never shopped at B&H before so I'm not sure if they offer such things.

Thanks

Extended warranty is a waste of money. They add absolutely nothing to the resale value and in the long run it's better to just pay for the repair on an individual basis. Unless you plan to subject the camera to constant extreme environment or situations your camera should last you for years. If you want security it's better to look into getting insurance for the camera. If anything happens the insurance company will pay for the repair or replace the camera.
