Question for Mr Barry Green

Hi there I have just received your DVX book and DVD in the post, and have been reading through the book alot in excitement. (LOL.)
What I wanted to ask you was, you mentioned it is best to shoot in letterbox mode if I plan to uprezz to HD or blow up for a film festival, as it'll have the best picture compared to if I shot in squeeze mode...... should I go ahead with this? I normally shoot in squeeze mode and just uprezz using Sony Vegas Pro 10 and I see no difference when I use Instant HD.

Thanks.

An internet search reports that Barry wrote that in his testing the letterbox option had more lines of resolution than Squeeze. Not certain though that one could easily see the difference. If you're looking for better resolution for up-rezzing see if you can find one of the Panasonic anamorphic lenses for your camera. You lose no resolution at all. I had one but have sold it since I moved on to an HPX370. If I'm wrong I know Barry will correct this when he has time.

Best wishes,

Tom Harman

Hey thanks for you help Tom, much appreciated.

Shoot Squeeze with Vert. Det. Freq set to THIN.

Hey thanks David. This is the best option for now?

Just like David says, shoot squeeze and THIN. There's obviously a little more to it than that, but that's how you get the best results. I shot my short that way, and here's how it looks in 720:

Hi Alex nice video I have seen it before. I always shoot squeeze mode in thin but I was just curious as to what Barry said about getting the best picture when uprezzing or blowing up your film.

You can get a few extra pixels of res out of letterbox, but is it worth it? I long ago switched to advising to just using Squeeze with 24pA and THIN line detail. It does an excellent job, with no hassle.

Ah ok, well thank-you for your feedback. Squeeze mode it is then!!!!

I really wanted to ask you as well Mr Green about the bit rate for DVX footage when I render. I always have it at 4,000,000 but someone told me to put it up to 10,000,000 for better picture? I use sony vegas pro 10. I never understand what to render it as when I've uprezzed the footage to HD. (720p)

If you could help me with that I would be very grateful. I thought you would know more than anyone :)
