Using XH-A1 lens hood on 35mm lenses

I just bought a Letus extreme, and I can't afford a matte box yet, so I had an idea, what if I bought a step up ring from 52 (my lens size) to 72 (size of xha1 lens) and just squeezed the stock lens hood onto the step up ring? $5 fix. Brilliant?

Anyone else had a similar idea or know how to make a zero budget matte box?

I don't see why this would not work, but people use matte boxes not only to block out stray light, but also for filters, which the XHA1 lens hood would not be able to hold. You may have issues of the lens hood not sitting well on the stepping ring and I doubt it'd be a snug fit.

The XH-A1 lens hood is not threaded, rather it fits around the A1's shroud. I'm sure you could rig it to a 77mm filter size, but it would take a lot of gaff tape and would look none too pretty!

If all you're looking to do is block the sun (not hold filters), then there are plenty of good cardboard mattebox designs floating around.
