Question For BenB - Motion2 Plugins in FCP....

I was checking out your Waking Life tutorial and I want to try it - problem is FCP isn't seeing any of Motion's Plug Ins. My dual single G4 doesn't have a video card that will run Motion 2 but I have installed the contents, as well as upgraded to FCP 5.1.3.

I also tried it on a G5 that's been upgraded to all the latest and FCP couldn't find the filters on that one either. I even tried manually moving them to FCP's application support/plugins folder. No go - but it runs Motion 2 just fine and the Line Art plugin is there and working.

Anyway, if you could enlighten me as to what I might be doing wrong I'd be eternally grateful.

I hope I didn't offend anyone - but if you're NOT BenB and know the answer to the question I'd be just as grateful for the answer :D

I'm not BenB but since you're inviting responses from those other than Ben, I'll give it a shot.

You first must be at OS X 10.4.8. FCP should recognize the Fx plugs with 10.4.8 and FCP 5.1.2 and above. No reason to move them. First of all, any Fx plugs which work in both FCP and Motion are installed in a Fx PlugIns folder, not the PlugIns folder. Secondly, by choosing Effects->Recommended Effects any of the Motion plug-ins which will run on your system should be showing up.

The way that you determine whether you have the Motion plug-ins is by looking at all of your plug-ins in the Effects tab in the browser. The Motion plug-ins would be labeled Fx plugins.

Nothing at all will show up on the G4.

So, first thing to do is make certain that you are at 10.4.8. You might want to trash FCP prefs.

Weirdness. I'm doing the FCP 'crossgrade' on a G4 and a G5 and I'm having the same problem with the Motion filters not showing up. I trilled killing the prefs and no luck. I'm using 10.4.8 and 5.1.3 on both machines.

The Motion 2 fx plugs are not broken in 5.1.3. I can see all of mine and they work.

Magic Bullet Colorista's GUI is broken and some banner controls for Fx Factory are lost. Autmoatic Duck Pro Import (which of course is not an fx plug) is completely broken and Wes Plate advises uses of AD not to upgrade to 5.1.3 at this point.

I've just finished a week in which I had to meet several deadlines, 6 days on 12 hours of sleep. Plus it's now Mardi Gras here in New Orleans, so I won't be totally functional until some time late Wed night or Thur morning when I come back to this so called "normal" state of conciousness.

I have only used 5.1.3 enough to know it fixes the P2 bug problem for me. Not surew what's up with your FX Plug plugins not showing up. If you have the full version of Motion installed, they just show up. Don't move anything, you'll only break it. I have found setting to "Recommended Effects" will make FX Plug plugins on some systems dissapear, that actually work. Not sure what the answer is, I'll look into it later in the week when I'm back from Mardi Gras. Unless someone else finds a solution first.

If you have FCP 5.1.2 or 5.1.3 installed, and Motion in it's latest version (I'm drawing a blank, Mardi Gras already clouding mind, must maintain control, losing control, strange energy over taking me, can't fight it, must not give in, not until 4pm today...) everything should be fine. Don't do any customized installs or anything. Make sure Motion is up to it's latest version.
