Question about using metadata from P2Viewer

Hi everyone,

I'm using the HVX200 with an Avid Media Compser software and i have a couple of questions:

1. I noticed that using the P2Viewer app you can get all sorts of useful metadata and even enter some more manually. Is there any way to have that metadata appear in Avid when I open the clips? It would be really useful, otherwise I only have a bynch of files with meaningless names.

2. Also, speaking of metadata, do you guys think it is feasible to import them into a database program for future reference? We're going to be shooting a tv series over a whole year and it would make our lives easier if I could just have a big database containing all the info from the shots.

Let me know if you have ideas/suggestions about these two things.

Thanks, TDX

The meta data is definitely there in P2 clips, but to what extend Avid gives you access to it I don't know. AFAIK, P2/MXF support is still somewhat lacking in Avid.

Imagine Product's HD Log will extract all of the metadata from MXF files and put them into a catalog that is easy to search and is supposed to work with Avid.

As far as I know, Avid doesn't do anything with the metadata. EDIUS maintains the metadata throughout the edit, and I believe Matrox Axio does as well. I think FCP is supposed to now integrate the metadata into the transferred Quicktime clip, but AFAIK there's no way to "get at" that metadata once it's embedded in the QT .mov (is there?)

Hopefully Avid will update their app to support all modes of the HVX, and allow proper integration of the metadata.

Ok, thanks for the info. It sucks though that HD Log is Mac-only, since we're using a PC. Maybe I should give Edius a try...

Windows logger, TEPX, will receive an update in first quarter with P2 support as one of the new features.
