Question about telephoto lens

Hey, I have no camera shops around me so I can't go test em out in there, but I really want to get a lens that can go further (y'know, for spying on ppl)
You know the 2x crop on the t2i? the 640 movie mode crop or the 2 times zoom you get to focus on things, I'm wondering what size lens could equal that amount of zoom, would a 250mm be able to go that far? (I'm doubting, but hoping)

Thanks

alright, you got me good there, that page confused me so much it forced me to find comparison pictures of the lens I want thanks though I actually understood but couldn't vision it in my mind, this page did a 55-250mm comparison it's pretty far not sure if the ppl will see me when I'm spying on them, I might need some fake bushes to take with me or a giant plastic rock from the studio
