question about rode videomic + 7d

I received my rode videomic just the other day and was eager to give it a test run. What ended up happening was that the 7d would boost the gain up insanely high leaving a very loud hiss in the background of anything i would record with the videomic plugged in. I then plugged the videomic directly into my mac and with the levels boosted all the way to max it would hardly register sound with me speaking very directly into the mic. Is the rode mic just very very quiet? Are there any tricks I need to know? I find it somewhat hard to believe that it would hardly pick up sound at all just inches in front of the mic by design. Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

Does anybody here own both the 7D and the rode videomic? Any help on if this is normal or not would be greatly appreciated so that I know if I need to ship it back for an exchange or not. Thanks for any help in advance.

Flip the -10db switch inside the Videomic battery compartment. Big improvement. Default settings the Videomic is really hot for the 7d.

So when you plug your rode mic directly into the 7D and record you had a loud audible hiss in the background of everything?

I noticed that it was really quiet on the mac too...what did this do for that?

I'm gonna play around, I have a shoot with it and the GH1 this morning that I couldn't get an audio recorder for >.< Ironically I had one I didn't need when we shot on the EX-1 the other day (we're gonna be mixing the footage but not in the same scene...should actually work out well.)

I was getting this problem when the Rode Videomic was switched to -10dB. After I changed it to 0 db it was much better.

Thanks for the info about the switches, I never read the manual. Using the VideoMic with the 7D has been pretty uselessfor me until we can disable AGC with Magic Lantern

Had the same problem with -10db and regular. AGC just kills it. Use the 7D audio as a reference to match with a externla field recorder and mic setup. Something like the h4n or a tascam.

on the rode, there are 3 settings on the back, the top, middle and off, whats the difference beteween those two?

Top is a low cut filter I believe...for cutting out low frequencies on mic, such as if there is some kind of low hum from some equipment or something. Personally without monitoring I wouldn't touch the low-cut...no reason to strip out frequencies for no good reason in the field if you can't hear what you're doing. You can always do it in post.

I read this in the manual, it's called the pad switch.

Problem is, I couldn't figure out how to get in there and flip the switch. I saw the diagram but where is the switch?

thnx

the switch is REALLY tiny, i mean so tiny i had to get a thumb tack to switch it. If your looking at the mic with the battery opening to your right, its in the upper right hand corner.

I think im going to try the Rode plugged into the zoom, and a splitter to go out to headphones and into 7D, and see how that goes.

I just checked mine and it shipped with 0db as a default. There wouldn't be any improvement changing it to -10db or -20db to get rid of the hiss correct? It seems like changing it from the default would make it worse.
