Question about my Canon EF Adapter

For my next film, I wanted to get a lens that gave a wider view than ones that came with my XL1s, but cheaper than the wide angle lens you can buy for the XL1s. I looked around and came across the EF adapter cheap on ebay. I have Sigma 18mm-50mm super wide angle lens for my Canon Rebel and tried to put them on my XL1s thinking that they will give a much greater wide angle view, but god was I wrong. When I view the lens through the XL1s, it's completely zoomed in, not even close to wide angle. Am I doing something wrong? When I received the EF adapter, it didn't come with any instructions so I don't know how to fully use it. I don't even know what the button on the left side is for. To all that can help, I greatly appreciate it. :)

Because the XL1s has a small chip size, any lens that you put on there will not have the normal field of view. Instead there is a crop factor of 7.8. So an 18mm lens will have a FOV equivalent to a 140mm lens. If you're looking for a wider lens, the adapter isn't the way to go.

*sigh* That's what I feared, I just didn't want to believe it. So other than the wide angle lens canon makes, is there any other lens out there that I can get to widen the view? Thanks for you help

As far as I know there's no EF lens out there wide enough to compensate for the crop factor. A wide angle adapter would be your best shot.

Well, I'm going to see if I can get the 3x Wide Angle lens for the XL1s. If not, I'm just going to have to make some compromises. I'm going to take a look at the adapters and see if the distortion isn't to bad with them. Before I go searching though, are there any particular ones you would suggest?

Not sure if there are any specific for the XL1s, but when looking at wide angle lenses you want names like Century Optics and 16x9. Most other brands are crap.

Thanks for all your help man, I will definitely take a look at those brands. The adapters I've bought in the past has been pretty crappy in quality, but these seem to be the real deal. I'm trying to become a director, but I'm learning all aspects of filmmaking so I would know personally what can and can't be done. It's a learning experience every time so that's why I'm not to mad that I wasted my money on the EF adapter (plus, I got it for a very cheap price). Another thing, since living in Virginia, it's been harder to network with other filmmakers since there isn't to many around (Hampton Roads area) interested in filmmaking. I'm hoping with this film I'm working on and my previous one, I can network at film festivals and sites like this one.
